HBO’s ‘Lanterns’ has only aired a couple of episodes, and already one supporting character has become the subject of intense fan speculation. Paul Ben-Victor’s Antaan, introduced in the show’s second episode “Trust Fall,” carries a backstory and description that many viewers believe points directly to a well known Green Lantern villain hiding under a new name.
Antaan made his official on-screen debut as an extraterrestrial figure devoted to exposing the truth and delivering vengeance against those who wronged his people. That framing alone was enough to reignite a theory that has followed the character since casting was first announced.

In the comics, this character’s real name is Atros, and some believe the show may have simply changed it into something less on the nose for live action. The theory centers on Atrocitus, one of ‘Green Lantern’ comics’ most significant villains and the founder of the rage fueled Red Lantern Corps.
Atrocitus is best known as the leader of the Red Lanterns, who derive their power from red rings of rage the way Green Lanterns draw theirs from will. Like Antaan, Atrocitus saw his people from the planet Ryut killed by rogue Manhunters, though Atrocitus watched the destruction spread across his entire space sector while Antaan only saw his own planet destroyed.
Some skeptics have suggested the show could simply be introducing an original character who shares thematic similarities with Atrocitus rather than adapting him outright under a new name. Even so, given how closely Antaan’s introduced motivations track with Atrocitus’s established comic book history, that explanation feels increasingly unlikely to many fans following the theory closely.
Paul Ben-Victor’s Role in HBO’s Lanterns
Paul Ben-Victor, known for his work on ‘The Wire,’ joined the cast of ‘Lanterns’ alongside Kyle Chandler as Hal Jordan, Aaron Pierre as John Stewart, and Nathan Fillion as Guy Gardner. Antaan is introduced as a survivor from a species targeted for genocide by the Manhunters, ancient robotic beings originally created by the Guardians of the Universe as a proto Green Lantern police force before they turned violent and were ultimately replaced by the Corps.
The character’s arrival in episode two expanded a mythology that had, up to that point, felt grounded in a small town murder mystery. Two episodes into its run, ‘Lanterns’ had already introduced an overwhelming amount of new mythology, characters, and cosmic threats to a story that started as a grounded investigation in small town Nebraska.
Do you think Antaan and Atrocitus are one and the same?
Showrunner Chris Mundy has addressed the resemblance between Antaan and Atrocitus directly. Speaking with TheWrap about blending magical elements with the show’s grounded tone, Mundy said he thinks of Antaan as very much analogous to Atrocitus, describing him as a big, hulking, red guy who in the show becomes a spurned man trying to make up for his trauma. He added that the writers tried to make everything relatable without undermining the source material or minimizing its comic book roots.
Atrocitus and the Red Lantern Corps Comic Origins
Atrocitus was introduced in ‘Green Lantern’ vol. 4, issue 25, back in 2008, where he witnessed the deaths of his wife and children when rogue Manhunters laid waste to Space Sector 666. In the comics, only five beings, including Atrocitus, survived the destruction of that sector, and the character then renamed himself Atrocitus.
In the comics, Atrocitus belongs to an alien species whose people were exterminated by the Manhunters, and he swears vengeance on the Guardians of the Universe for creating them in the first place. That enmity with the Guardians has historically placed Atrocitus in direct conflict with members of the Green Lantern Corps, making him a natural adversary if the show is indeed building toward his full introduction.
Atrocitus remains by far the best known Red Lantern, though other notable characters have worn the ring over the years, including Guy Gardner and Supergirl at various points, alongside Dex-Starr, a cat who witnessed the murder of its owner in a home invasion. If the show does eventually confirm Antaan’s identity, it would open the door to introducing the wider spectrum of colored Lantern Corps beyond the familiar green.
How the Manhunters Connect to the Mystery
The Manhunters function as the season’s central antagonists, described in the show as capable of shapeshifting into any species and adopting their technology. Their brutal history of wiping out entire civilizations is what originally drew the Green Lanterns’ attention and intervention, and the revelation that a Manhunter killed Abin Sur, the original bearer of Hal Jordan’s ring, ties the current mystery directly into the franchise’s founding mythology.
That shared history between Antaan and the Manhunters is central to why the Atrocitus theory has taken hold so quickly among viewers. Whether the name Atrocitus will ever actually be spoken in ‘Lanterns,’ or whether the character will ever wield a Red Lantern ring, remains unclear. It is possible Antaan is simply an adjacent character built with a similar backstory as a nod to the comics without the show committing to a full adaptation.
The series has already proven it can draw an audience willing to follow its dense mythology closely. The first episode of ‘Lanterns’ racked up an impressive 9.3 million views in its first three days of availability across HBO and HBO Max, making it the biggest premiere for a DC Studios show on the platform to date and placing it among the top five premieres on HBO Max overall.
