‘Lanterns’ Finale Sneak Peek Reveals a Sheriff Standing Up for Hal Jordan a Decade Later
HBO’s ‘Lanterns’ has spent its first season unraveling one of the DC Universe’s most intriguing mysteries. The series follows Hal Jordan and John Stewart, played by Kyle Chandler and Aaron Pierre, two Green Lanterns stationed in the small town of Rushville, Nebraska. With only one episode left, the ‘Lanterns’ finale is shaping up to be a must-watch event.
The show has unfolded across 2 timelines. In 2016, Hal and John investigated strange alien activity in Rushville, eventually unmasking Zoe Macon as the entity behind it, and John killing her. The story then jumped forward 10 years to reveal that Hal had died after being stripped of his ring and spending a decade trying, and mostly failing, to make amends with the town.
On October 2, HBO Max shared a fresh sneak peek from the season finale, teasing a glimpse of Hal 10 years later. According to Bleeding Cool, the footage shows Sheriff Kane standing firmly by Hal and urging the people of Rushville to give him peace.
The brief scene offers a rare look at the town’s divided feelings toward the fallen Green Lantern during his final years. That fits the complicated legacy the series has built around Hal. His decade of trying to repair the damage he left behind has left plenty of residents with grudges, making the sheriff’s defense of him especially striking.
The finale has a lot to resolve. The suspect list surrounding Hal’s death reportedly includes figures like Billy Macon, who lost his father, stepmother, and ex-wife to Hal’s crusade, and the show has hinted that even the sheriff may not be entirely innocent.
Episode 7 also expanded the story beyond Rushville. John and the Hal-O-Gram, a digital backup of Hal’s consciousness stored inside his ring, traveled off-world and crossed paths with Sinestro, setting the stage for a dramatic conclusion.

The finale teaser has fueled even more speculation. It confirms that Guy Gardner will appear, while a line from the Hal-O-Gram warning John that he’s taking a very big risk has sparked theories about John’s future.
The season finale of ‘Lanterns’ airs Sunday, October 4, at 9 p.m. ET on HBO and streams on HBO Max at the same time. It wraps up an 8-episode run that has released weekly since August 16. Fans in the UK can expect a similar overnight release, as previous episodes arrived simultaneously at 2 a.m.

The series has been a notable success for HBO and DC Studios. ‘Lanterns’ has averaged nearly 19 million viewers per episode worldwide, and James Gunn has stressed that the finale is a season finale rather than a series ending.

With the mystery of Hal Jordan’s death nearing its conclusion and new characters like Guy Gardner on the way, Sunday’s episode could set up an even bigger future for the DCU’s Green Lanterns.
