‘Lanterns’ Finally Breaks Into Nielsen’s Top 10, and the Numbers Are More Impressive Than They Look

Prestige superhero television has had a rocky track record lately, with plenty of ambitious projects fading fast despite strong reviews and starry casts. That made the early weeks of HBO’s “Lanterns” rollout feel like something of a gamble, especially when the show’s viewership didn’t immediately show up where fans expected to see it.

Nielsen’s weekly streaming charts track total minutes watched across a rolling window, and for a slow-burn mystery series airing weekly rather than dropping all at once, that measurement system can take time to catch up with a show’s actual momentum. “Lanterns” spent its first two weeks completely absent from Nielsen’s Top 10, a gap that left some fans questioning whether the series was truly connecting with audiences.

That changed in dramatic fashion during the week of August 31 to September 6. “Lanterns” debuted on Nielsen’s acquired titles chart at No. 8, racking up 500 million minutes watched, a figure tied with “Family Guy” and ahead of both “NCIS” and “The First 48.” Because the series also airs on HBO’s linear cable channel, Nielsen measures it against the acquired list rather than the originals chart, a technical distinction that likely delayed its first appearance on the rankings.

Nielsen has also begun rolling out daily viewership data in addition to its weekly reports, and that faster reporting painted an even stronger picture for the show. On Monday, September 14, “Lanterns” posted 138 million viewing minutes, making it the most-watched program across all of American streaming that day, according to Nielsen’s daily figures reported by The Hollywood Reporter.

The show’s delayed chart debut becomes even more notable when compared to how quickly Nielsen’s Top 10 typically fills with major streaming originals. For context, the bottom of the acquired chart during “Lanterns'” premiere week sat at 455 million minutes for “Modern Family,” a bar the new series didn’t clear until its third episode had aired.

Since debuting on August 16, “Lanterns” has also built significant momentum on HBO Max’s own internal charts, reportedly spending 30 consecutive days in the platform’s U.S. Top 10 TV Shows list and currently sitting as the most-watched title on the service domestically. That steady internal ranking suggests the Nielsen delay had more to do with measurement quirks than any lack of audience interest.

The show’s climb into Nielsen’s rankings also stands out against the backdrop of other recent DC television efforts. “The Penguin,” HBO’s acclaimed limited series spinoff from “The Batman,” reportedly didn’t chart on Nielsen’s weekly Top 10 until the week following its finale, a notably slower path to national ratings visibility than what “Lanterns” has managed with far fewer episodes available.

That comparison has fueled plenty of online discussion about just how efficiently “Lanterns” is converting its limited episode count into measurable viewership, especially with only four episodes factored into its current 500-million-minute total. With the season continuing its weekly rollout through early October, the show’s numbers appear positioned to keep climbing as more episodes become available.

Given how quickly “Lanterns” turned an initially quiet start into one of the most-watched programs on American streaming, the series looks like it’s building exactly the kind of sustained audience HBO would want heading into its final stretch.
