‘Lanterns’ Just Dropped the DCU’s Clearest Batman Reference Yet, and It Comes From Hal Jordan

Batman has been the elephant in the room of James Gunn’s DC Universe for a while now. Fans have spotted him in small glimpses and hidden nods, but the Dark Knight has yet to get a proper introduction. That is part of why every Gotham-adjacent Easter egg gets dissected so thoroughly.

HBO’s ‘Lanterns’ has been quietly building its own trail of Batman breadcrumbs. Episode 2 revealed that Sheriff Kerry Kane comes from Gotham, which made a passing mention of “Barb” in Episode 1 much more significant. Episode 3 followed with a Janus Cosmetics poster, a nod to the company Roman Sionis owned in the comics before becoming Black Mask.

Now the series has taken the next step. DCU Updates pointed out that Hal Jordan referenced Batman in the most recent episode, with the line about how Guy Gardner “ripped off that bat guy over in Gotham.” The post has drawn plenty of attention from fans, with one reply simply reading “Finallyyy.”

The moment comes in Episode 6, titled “Bad Optics,” during an uncomfortable diner conversation between Hal and John Stewart. John arrives in Rushville expecting an apology, but Hal changes the subject by mocking Guy, whom he calls the gym teacher on TV, and his panda-carrying bubble stunt. He then adds that Guy put a beacon in the middle of town so people can summon him, borrowing the idea from the Gotham vigilante.

This confirms Batman is already active in the DCU by 2026. That it is the first time anyone in the live-action DCU has mentioned Batman, though not fully by name. The Ringer’s recap adds that the line sets Hal up to dunk on his successor, who first appeared as Earth’s Green Lantern in Gunn’s ‘Superman’.

The beacon itself pays off later in the episode. John lights the signal to reach Guy, and Nerdist notes it does actually summon him, though it takes several hours. Unlike the Bat-Signal, it seems anybody can use Guy’s beacon, although nobody in Rushville ever does.

The residents are not exactly fans of the Green Lantern Corps. When the signal first appears, it is covered in graffiti, something that would probably please Hal, who evidently isn’t impressed with Guy. That detail also gives the joke a little extra bite, since Gotham’s version sits safely atop the police department.

Since ‘Creature Commandos’, fans have known that Batman exists in the DCU. Hal’s remark suggests he has been active for a while.

‘Lanterns’ has confirmed Batman’s history with 2 Green Lanterns. But it also noted that Hal appears to be truly dead in the 2026 timeline, which makes it hard to imagine Batman and Hal sharing screen time. Batman is set to lead the announced ‘The Brave and the Bold’ movie, though casting for the role has yet to start.

The timing is fun, too. The reference landed the same weekend Matt Reeves shared a new look at ‘The Batman: Part II’ to celebrate Batman Day. Whether or not that was planned, it makes Hal’s throwaway line feel like part of a bigger conversation.

Another fan reply on the DCU Updates post joked about the irony of these being some of Hal’s last words. It is a sharp observation, since a bitter jab about Batman ends up being part of how the character is remembered on screen. It also shows how much a single line can carry in a franchise still building its world.
