‘Lanterns’ Officially Becomes HBO Max’s Highest-Performing Comic Book Series Ever

DC Studios has spent the past few years carefully rebuilding its television presence, betting heavily on grounded, character-driven storytelling rather than pure spectacle. That approach carried real risk, especially for a project centered on characters without the instant recognition of Batman or Superman.

That gamble appears to have paid off in a major way. Premiering into HBO’s coveted Sunday night timeslot, previously occupied by ‘House of the Dragon,’ the show carried enormous pressure to perform right out of the gate, and early numbers suggested audiences were more than willing to follow DC into less conventional territory.

‘Lanterns‘ has officially landed among the top five series launches in HBO Max history, both domestically and globally, making it the highest-performing comic book show the platform has ever released. According to figures from HBO and HBO Max, the series pulled in 9.3 million viewers worldwide within its first three days of release, with 6.6 million of those views coming from the United States alone.

That opening weekend total outpaced the debuts of several recent HBO heavyweights, including ‘IT: Welcome to Derry,’ ‘The Penguin,’ and ‘True Detective: Night Country.’ Those four shows went on to average at least 17.5 million viewers over their first 90 days of release, suggesting strong potential for ‘Lanterns’ to keep growing as its first season continues.

The show’s success hasn’t stopped at its premiere. By its third episode, which aired August 30, ‘Lanterns’ had climbed to 10 million viewers globally and 7 million in the U.S. after three days, marking a new series high and confirming the show’s audience has continued expanding rather than dropping off after launch.

That growth pattern is particularly notable given how streaming premieres typically perform, with many shows seeing viewership dip after their opening episode rather than climb further. The pilot episode alone has now attracted more than 20 million viewers worldwide, according to HBO Max, underscoring just how much staying power the series has demonstrated since its debut.

‘Lanterns’ centers on rookie Green Lantern John Stewart, played by Aaron Pierre, and veteran Lantern Hal Jordan, played by Kyle Chandler, as the two intergalactic cops investigate a dark, earthbound murder mystery with cosmic ties. Showrunner Chris Mundy, best known for ‘Ozark,’ developed the series alongside co-writers Damon Lindelof and DC mastermind Tom King, trading typical space battles for a more grounded procedural tone.

That unconventional approach hasn’t hurt the show’s critical reception either. ‘Lanterns’ currently sits around 94 percent from critics and 86 percent from audiences on Rotten Tomatoes, meaning the massive viewership numbers have arrived alongside genuinely strong reviews rather than existing in isolation.

For a DC Studios series specifically, this ranks as the biggest premiere the studio has ever had on HBO Max, surpassing prior efforts like ‘The Penguin,’ ‘Peacemaker,’ and the animated series ‘Creature Commandos.’ ‘Lanterns’ also comfortably beat out HBO’s own ‘A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms,’ which drew 6.7 million U.S. viewers over its first three days back in January, placing the Green Lantern series among the network’s strongest launches across any genre.

If ‘Lanterns’ maintains this kind of momentum through the rest of its season, DC Studios has considerably more incentive to expand further into the wider Green Lantern Corps mythology beyond just Hal and John. Given how strongly audiences have responded to a show built around lesser-known characters and a mystery-driven format, the results suggest James Gunn and Peter Safran’s rebooted DC Universe is finding real traction with viewers well beyond its most famous names.
