HBO’s ‘Lanterns’ has given fans their clearest link yet to Batman’s world, and it runs directly through Sheriff Kerry Kane. The second episode confirmed that Sheriff Kerry Kane, played by Kelly Macdonald, is not actually from Rushville but from Gotham City. The reveal arrives just as viewers were already piecing together earlier hints scattered through the premiere.

The episode strengthens Kerry Kane’s Batman connection with a direct reveal that she is from Gotham City. The series stars Aaron Pierre as John Stewart and Kyle Chandler as Hal Jordan, and comes from Chris Mundy, Damon Lindelof, and Tom King. With Gotham now explicitly tied to one of the show’s central figures, the mystery surrounding Kerry Kane has only grown.

In the same call where she reveals her origins, she ends by saying “Tell Barb I said hi,” which many believe points to Barbara Gordon, also known as Batgirl. The layering of two separate Bat family surnames in a single scene has not gone unnoticed by longtime comic readers.

There is also a theory that Kerry Kane could be a tribute to Bob Kane, the comic legend usually credited as Batman’s creator, and the coincidence of her surname combined with her contacts in Gotham has fueled that reading as well. Whether the show intends a direct comic accurate tie or a looser homage remains unclear.

By the time episode 2 aired, much of the audience was already primed for confirmation.

At the same time, nobody expects Batman himself to appear in ‘Lanterns,’ since the role has reportedly not even been cast and comic book productions tend to leak that kind of casting news quickly. The DCU’s first real excursion into Gotham will instead come with ‘Clayface,’ the body horror film debuting October 23, 2026. Even so, Sheriff Kane hailing from Batman’s hometown is noteworthy, and it raises the question of why the writers gave her this particular backstory, especially since she does not seem thrilled by her past connection to Billy Macon. Every new detail about her past seems to raise another question rather than settle one.

Not every reaction has been glowing, however. One review noted that Kane tells Hal she is originally from Gotham but sounds more like she walked off the set of a wintry Midwestern drama, questioning whether the character choice is landing as intended two episodes in. That mixed response suggests the show still has work to do in making Kane’s mystery feel essential rather than distracting.
