‘Law & Order: Special Victims Unit’ Season 28 Episode 5 Recap and Ending Explained: Why Evan’s Testimony Decides the Davis Case
The latest ‘Law & Order: Special Victims Unit’ recap and ending explained starts at a wedding reception that turns violent. The episode, titled “Forsaken,” aired on NBC on November 5 and is also available to stream on Peacock. It follows a wedding guest who is assaulted at the reception, and Benson and the squad uncover a secret that changes the course of the investigation.
The hour also carried a notable casting moment. Knicks star Jalen Brunson made his acting debut as Detective Jay Madison, joining Captain Olivia Benson in the case. What follows is a full look at how the investigation unfolded and what the ending resolves and leaves open.
Recap of the Wedding Reception Assault
The story opens at the reception for Johnathan and Andrea Oakes, where two bridesmaids enter a washroom and find an injured woman on the floor. The victim is a sixteen year old named Chloe Davis, and Rollins reports that she was sexually assaulted and that her head was smashed against the vanity.
Chloe offered very little at first. Benson noticed marks on her hands, but Chloe’s mother interrupted the conversation, and Chloe could only describe reddish hair, a white shirt and someone older than her. Detective Terry Bruno, who had been sent on a brief break, rejoined the investigation.
The squad first pursued a red haired man named George, who ran and later said he was nervous because he had bought illegal substances from a caterer called Scott. Captain Curry questioned Scott, who was on probation after missing a hearing, but he denied raping anyone.
The case turned inward once Chloe said her attacker was not at the venue. Rollins learned that Rick Davis is not Chloe’s biological father and that he has a harassment record. The squad soon suspected Rick, then dug up a sealed record involving a DWI and a resisting arrest charge.
Ending Explained and Evan’s Testimony
The truth came from Chloe herself. She told Benson that her brother Tyler had pursued a girl at the wedding, and when the girl rejected him, he was humiliated, noticed Chloe watching and attacked her. Chloe also admitted that Tyler had been harming her for years. Bruno and Renee then arrested Tyler.
The courtroom scenes carried the second half of the hour. The judge set Tyler’s bail at $250,000 and issued a temporary order of protection, while the defense tried to paint Chloe as a liar. Rick told the court that Tyler has a good heart and that Chloe is difficult, and Carisi argued that Rick was simply trying to protect his son.
Chloe’s mother then revealed troubling details about Tyler’s temper, and Chloe said her younger brother Evan was afraid of Tyler too. Evan took the stand and testified that Tyler attacked Chloe, and Rick stormed out of the courtroom.
The ending withholds a verdict, which is worth noting. One recap pointed out that the episode does not reveal the jury’s decision. TVLine described Rick and Monica as having effectively cast Chloe aside to protect Tyler, with Evan’s testimony proving her version of events was the truth.
Jalen Brunson Debut as Detective Madison
Rather than appearing as a meta cameo of himself, Brunson committed to playing a fully scripted character inside the NYPD. Details of his role were kept under wraps ahead of the broadcast. He appeared as a badged detective who helps the squad make a needed break in the case.
Madison’s scenes were practical and tied directly to the plot. Benson met him at a nearby diner to learn about the sealed record and how the DWI arrest went wrong. He had reviewed his notes from arresting Rick two years earlier and described a difficult man who blew well over the legal limit while shouting at officers with his teenage son still in the car.
Madison also told Benson that the weapon was a legal gray area, which suggested it was likely still inside the Davis home. The cops later found the weapon hidden at Rick and Monica’s.
The guest spot also carries some off screen background. Brunson has never hidden his love for the long running crime drama and has a close friendship with Mariska Hargitay. Ahead of the episode, NBC shared a throwback video of him saying he wanted to get on the show.
Critical Reaction to the Davis Family Storyline
Early reviews have been warm. In its review, TV Fanatic gave the episode a perfect rating and said it returned to what the series is supposed to be about, after worries left over from the previous week.
The same review praised the writing of the family. It said the story could easily have turned the Davises into caricatures but did not. Bill Heck played Rick, Jessalyn Gilsig played Monica and Emmett Moss played Evan.
Not every response treated the ending as complete. One reviewer called young Evan the hero of the hour but wished the story had continued past his testimony. That tension is what makes the finale linger, so did Evan’s testimony feel like the right place for ‘SVU’ to stop, or should the series have shown whether a jury gave Chloe the justice her own parents refused her?
