Leaked Set Footage Offers First Look at “Legend of Zelda” Live-Action Film
Sony Pictures has begun filming a live-action adaptation of The Legend of Zelda in Wellington, New Zealand.
Shooting started in November and is expected to continue for six months, finishing around April 2026. Early footage from the set doesn’t show much of the locations, but it does give fans a blurry look at the costumes for the main characters.
Benjamin Evan Ainsworth will play Link, and Bo Bragason has been cast as Princess Zelda. The costumes appear to take inspiration from the Breath of the Wild video game.

The film is an American fantasy adventure based on Nintendo’s iconic video game series. It is produced by Columbia Pictures and Nintendo and distributed worldwide by Sony Pictures Releasing. Wes Ball is directing the project and also serves as a producer, alongside Shigeru Miyamoto, Avi Arad, and Joe Hartwick Jr. The screenplay is written by Derek Connolly and T. S. Nowlin.

Before Bo Bragason was cast, Patricia Summersett, the voice of Zelda in Breath of the Wild, expressed interest in reprising the role for the live-action film. Actress Hunter Schafer also publicly shared her desire to play Zelda after online fan castings circulated. In July 2025, Sony officially announced Bragason and Ainsworth as the leads.
The film is scheduled for release worldwide on May 7, 2027. It was originally planned for March 26, 2027, but the date was later moved. Principal photography will continue in New Zealand, where the production team is building sets and shooting key scenes for the adaptation.
