Leaked Trailer Description Reveals First Look at Christopher Nolan’s Epic ‘The Odyssey’

Christopher Nolan is diving into Greek mythology for his next big movie, The Odyssey. This upcoming film is based on Homer’s classic poem and stars Matt Damon as the legendary Odysseus. According to a trailer description leaked by Daniel Richtman on Patreon, fans got their first look at what’s coming, and it sounds like a wild, emotional ride.

The trailer opens quietly with a shot of the ocean. You can hear Matt Damon narrating over the waves. There’s a mention of Zeus, and the camera shows some peaceful but eerie shots of the beach.

Then it shifts to something a bit more intense, men on horses charging toward a large black object on the shore. It kind of looks like a piece of a broken ship. The ocean is a big focus throughout the trailer, always in the background, mysterious and cold.

Later, we see Tom Holland, who plays Telemachus, talking to Jon Bernthal’s character. Telemachus is trying to find out what happened to his father, Odysseus. That’s when Bernthal starts asking people nearby in a loud and aggressive tone, kind of like he did in The Punisher. “Who has a story of Odysseus, huh? Is it you? Do you have a story? Some say he’s rich, and some say he’s poor.”

As the music grows more intense, we see a group of men entering a dark cave. Then another voice says, “Some say he perished, some say he’s imprisoned.” Telemachus is seen crying, trying to understand what happened, but Bernthal’s character isn’t interested in rumors.

The trailer ends on a haunting image, Matt Damon alone on a broken piece of his ship, floating in the middle of the sea, lost and silent. The words “THE ODYSSEY” appear on screen, and the music fades out slowly.

Richtman posted the trailer description on his Patreon account.

The movie is being made by Nolan’s company Syncopy and released by Universal Pictures. This is Nolan’s first project after Oppenheimer, and it looks like he’s going even bigger this time. The cast is packed with big names, Tom Holland, Anne Hathaway, Zendaya, Lupita Nyong’o, Robert Pattinson, Charlize Theron, and Jon Bernthal. Damon and Nolan have worked together before on Interstellar and Oppenheimer, so their team-up here isn’t a surprise.

The movie was officially announced back in October 2024, when Universal confirmed Nolan would be turning Homer’s Odyssey into a film. Filming started in February 2025 and is happening in lots of places, Greece, Italy, Iceland, Morocco, Los Angeles, and parts of the UK and Ireland. The budget is huge—around $250 million, making it Nolan’s most expensive film ever. It’s also the first major film to be shot completely with IMAX film cameras.

Even though some fans have already seen Matt Damon in costume as Odysseus, there has been talk online about the accuracy of his armor. But people are still hyped about the visuals. Ellen Mirojnick, the costume designer from Oppenheimer, is working on this one too. The music is by Ludwig Göransson, who’s also returning from Oppenheimer, and based on the trailer, the score is dark and mysterious.

Years ago, there were rumors that Nolan might direct a movie about Troy, but he didn’t go in that direction. Instead, he chose to focus on Odysseus’s long and dangerous trip home after the Trojan War. He’s said he’s more interested in that story than the usual Roman ones about Caesar or Cleopatra.

The Odyssey is still being filmed in places like Scotland, but it’s set to hit theaters on July 17, 2026. With the cast, the IMAX format, and Nolan behind the camera, fans are expecting something epic.
