Lee Byung-hun Willing to Return as Front Man in New ‘Squid Game’ Spinoff

Lee Byung-hun, the Korean star known for playing the mysterious Front Man in Squid Game, recently shared more about his character and what might come next for the show.
The Front Man is the masked figure who runs the deadly games with a cold and serious attitude. Over time, especially in the latest season and the recent finale, we see more layers to him — sadness, doubt, and maybe even some guilt.
Lee Byung-hun plays the role with great control, showing a man who seems empty inside because of his past. His only comfort appears to be following strict rules and sometimes drinking whisky alone.
But everything changes when Gi-hun (played by Lee Jung-jae), the main player, comes back to the game determined to prove that people can be kind and selfless. This challenges the Front Man’s belief that people are selfish and don’t deserve kindness. Does the Front Man start to question his role? Or will he stay loyal to the game no matter what?
In an interview with The Hollywood Reporter, Lee opened up about his character’s growth and some of the final scenes that fans have been talking about. This includes the mysterious meeting between the Front Man and Gi-hun’s daughter, and a surprising moment where the Front Man runs into the recruiter, played by Cate Blanchett, on the streets of Los Angeles.
Cate Blanchett’s role has sparked rumors about a possible Squid Game spinoff set in the U.S. Lee shared his thoughts on how the game might look if it happened there. He said, “Well, depending on the culture and local circumstances, I suppose the ambience and the arena and the specifics of the games could be a little different. There could be some U.S. elements in there.”
But he believes the core reason people love Squid Game is because it shows a universal theme, how people lose their humanity. He added, “The essence of the Game would be the same.”
Fans are also excited about the idea of a spinoff focused on the Front Man. Lee said he and the show’s director, Hwang Dong-hyuk, have joked about this idea since the show started.
He explained, “We both thought that the Front Man or the recruiter could be interesting for more story, because we haven’t really explored these characters in their entirety yet. Their backstory is still vague, and their character is still a little murky.”
He’s clearly interested in digging deeper into the Front Man’s story and said, “As for your question, of course I’d be willing to star in it. The character has already been built and designed, and I’m very compelled by him. Just as the fans are curious to know more about him, I am too. That’s a story I’d be very willing to tell.”
Lee Byung-hun’s thoughts give fans hope that the Front Man’s story isn’t over yet, and maybe we’ll get to see more of this complex character soon.
