‘Legend of the White Dragon’ Finally Hits Theaters, Marking Jason David Frank’s Emotional Final Screen Role

Passion projects rarely survive the kind of turbulence this particular film endured, bouncing through pandemic delays, industry strikes, and a devastating personal loss that could have easily buried it for good. What began as a crowdfunded dream between a beloved genre actor and his longtime creative partner instead became something far more meaningful than either of them likely imagined.

Now, after six years of setbacks and an emotional weight few films ever carry, that story has finally reached the finish line audiences have been waiting for.

‘Legend of the White Dragon’ is now playing in theaters, currently holding an 80% Popcornmeter score from more than 50 audience ratings on Rotten Tomatoes. The film marks the final on-screen role of Power Rangers icon Jason David Frank, who portrays Erik Reed, a former superhero known as the White Dragon, three years into hiding as a fugitive while trying to clear his name and reunite with the family he’s kept secret.

According to Wikipedia, filming took place in 2021, with additional photography occurring in 2023, and the story centers on Erik’s return to the city he once swore to protect, only to find himself facing off against a mysterious villain named Dragon Prime, who is determined to see the White Dragon fall for good. Directed by Aaron Schoenke, who co-wrote the screenplay with Alex Kellerman, the film reunites Frank with fellow Power Rangers alumni Jason Faunt, Cerina Vincent, and Ciara Hanna, alongside David Ramsey, Mark Dacascos, Andrew Bachelor, and the late Michael Madsen.

According to GeekTyrant, “Legend of the White Dragon” grew out of an incredibly successful Kickstarter campaign back in 2020, built on the creative partnership Frank formed with Schoenke years earlier through the YouTube series “Super Power Beat Down.” Though the film exists in a separate universe from Power Rangers, it draws heavily on the larger-than-life superhero action and tokusatsu-inspired style that made Frank a genre legend in the first place.

The road to release proved unusually difficult even before Frank’s passing. FandomPulse reported that the film missed release windows in September 2023, early 2024, and September 2024, with some Kickstarter backers growing frustrated over the repeated delays, though producer Chris Jay maintained the extended timeline reflected a genuine commitment to finishing the film the way Frank had originally envisioned it.

Frank had reportedly been so invested in the project that he stepped away from other Power Rangers commitments to focus on it, viewing the film as the potential start of an entirely new franchise. Following his death, ScreenRant noted that the finished film carries a noticeably more mature, grittier tone than the polished, campy style fans associate with “Mighty Morphin’ Power Rangers,” making it feel less like a nostalgia trip and more like a fitting tribute for fans who grew up alongside Frank and have since faced their own share of life’s challenges.

With the film finally in theaters after such a long and difficult journey, “Legend of the White Dragon” stands as both an action-packed superhero send-off and a genuinely emotional farewell to one of the genre’s most beloved performers.
