Martin Scorsese has chosen his next project, and it’s bringing together two of Hollywood’s biggest stars. According to reports, Leonardo DiCaprio and Jennifer Lawrence will lead Scorsese’s film version of What Happens at Night, a ghostly drama based on Peter Cameron’s novel.

Apple Original Films is in talks to produce and finance the project alongside Studiocanal, which picked up the rights to the book last year.

The screenplay is being written by Patrick Marber, known for his Oscar-nominated work on Notes on a Scandal.

The story follows an American couple traveling to a snowy city in Europe to adopt a child. The trip is filled with challenges, especially as the wife battles cancer and grows weaker. The husband worries her illness will keep them from taking their baby home.

Once they arrive, they check into a massive, almost empty hotel filled with mysterious figures, including an aging singer, a reckless businessman, and a puzzling faith healer. As the couple struggles to complete their adoption, their own lives and relationship begin to unravel in the strange, frozen world around them.

Apple has worked closely with all three before. The studio backed Scorsese’s Killers of the Flower Moon, has first-look deals with both Scorsese’s company Sikelia and DiCaprio’s Appian Way, and also released Lawrence’s drama Causeway in 2022.

With Scorsese directing, Marber adapting the novel, and two Oscar-winning stars leading the cast, What Happens at Night is already shaping up to be one of the most high-profile films in development.
