Leonardo DiCaprio Says AI Could Become an “Enhancement Tool” in Future Filmmaking
Leonardo DiCaprio is thinking a lot about where movies are headed, and that includes the rise of AI.
In a new interview with Time, he talked about how new technology could shape the future of filmmaking. He admitted he worries about people in the industry losing their jobs, but he also sees potential in what AI could offer young creators.
DiCaprio explained that he doesn’t believe AI should replace human creativity, but he does think it might help filmmakers push their ideas further.
He said, “It could be an enhancement tool for a young filmmaker to do something we’ve never seen before,” making it clear that the key word for him is enhancement.
At the same time, DiCaprio doesn’t think AI-made work can truly feel like real art. He pointed to how AI-generated mashups on the internet can be fun but don’t last in people’s minds. He said, “I think anything that is going to be authentically thought of as art has to come from the human being.”
DiCaprio added that AI mashup songs can sound impressive at first. He gave examples like fake mixes of artists such as Michael Jackson or songs that mix styles in a surprising way. But he said these creations fade quickly. “It’s brilliant,” he said, “but then it gets its 15 minutes of fame and it just dissipates into the ether of other internet junk. There’s no anchoring to it. There’s no humanity to it, as brilliant as it is.”
His comments show that he sees value in AI but also believes that real emotional impact still has to come from people, not machines.
