Leonardo DiCaprio’s Appian Way Joins New ‘Wizard of Oz’ Project
Leonardo DiCaprio’s production company Appian Way is joining Verdi Productions and Danny Strong on a new documentary that explores how “The Wizard of Oz” was created. Variety was first to report the project, titled “Oz.” The film is already being made, with director Tom Donahue leading the documentary.
The team behind the project plans to revisit the making of the 1939 classic and the challenges faced during production.
According to the description shared with Variety, the film will look at the pressure placed on the original filmmakers and cast, including director Victor Fleming and Judy Garland. The documentary will also explore how the movie grew into a cultural landmark that still has influence today.
The filmmakers say they will use rare recordings and footage that have never been released. Their goal is to dive into what was happening inside the Hollywood studio system at the time and how the film pushed through creative hurdles. “The Wizard of Oz” has inspired many spinoffs over the years, from stage shows to the musical “Wicked.”
This new documentary is another partnership between Appian Way and Verdi Productions. Chad A. Verdi said, “We’re thrilled to continue our partnership with Appian Way and collaborate on our fourth production together. ‘The Wizard of Oz’ is a beloved classic, but the behind-the-scenes history of its making is even more extraordinary, and has yet to be fully told until now.”
Several producers are involved in bringing “Oz” to life, including Donahue, Ilan Arboleda, DiCaprio, Verdi, and Danny Strong.
Many others from Appian Way and Verdi Productions are also part of the project. Strong shared his excitement as well, saying, “To get to tell the creation of one of the most important works of art in the history of international cinema is an incredible honor… To be producing with Leonardo DiCaprio, Appian Way and their longtime collaborator Chad Verdi, truly makes this a dream team to tell this dream of a story.”
“Oz” is expected to be released in 2026.
