One of the biggest fan theories surrounding The Acolyte has once again been confirmed, and it’s a big one for Star Wars fans.

According to The Art of The Acolyte book, creator Leslye Headland has revealed that Qimir, also known as The Stranger, is actually the very first Knight of Ren. This revelation connects the Disney+ series directly to one of the most mysterious dark side groups in the Star Wars universe.

Before this confirmation, fans had long debated whether The Acolyte was secretly setting up the origins of the Knights of Ren rather than telling a traditional Sith story. Throughout the show, Qimir avoided calling himself a Sith, only saying that people “would call” him one — a choice of words that many took as a clue that he belonged to something different.

Headland explained the creative reasoning behind this in the book, saying, “It was in the design of the character, as well as knowing that we were going to introduce Darth Plagueis, who has to end up with Palpatine as his apprentice. Following the Rule of Two — a precept that limited the Sith to just two at any given time, a master and an apprentice — one way to keep it going is if the Stranger is the first Knight of Ren, part of a Sith-adjacent cult that we know eventually survives.”

This means Qimir wasn’t a Sith at all, but rather the founder of a new dark order that lived on separately from the traditional Sith line. In Star Wars lore, the Knights of Ren operate as a powerful but independent group that doesn’t always follow Sith traditions. Later stories show that the name “Ren” and the signature red lightsaber, known as “The Ren,” are passed down from leader to leader, making Qimir the origin of that legacy.

This revelation not only redefines Qimir’s role in The Acolyte but also fills in a long-missing piece of Star Wars history, bridging the gap between ancient Sith power and the dark side cult that would one day influence Kylo Ren and the sequel trilogy.
