Lily Allen Opens Up About Heartbreak Behind David Harbour Split in New Album
Singer Lily Allen is opening up about her recent split from actor David Harbour and how the breakup influenced her upcoming album. The former couple ended their four-year marriage eight months ago, and Allen says her new music helped her process the emotional fallout.
Speaking to British Vogue, Allen revealed that she recorded the album in just 16 days. “I made this record in December 2024 and it was a way for me to process what was happening in my life,” she said.
She added that the songs are inspired by her experiences in the marriage but aren’t a literal retelling. “There are things that are on the record that I experienced within my marriage, but that’s not to say that it’s all gospel. It is inspired by what went on in the relationship.”
Allen described the emotional state she was in while making the album: “Confusion, sorrow, grief, helplessness.” Some lyrics touch on betrayal and heartbreak, including lines from the songs “Sleepwalking” and “Dallas Major” that hint at infidelity and the challenges in her marriage.
Despite the pain, she says she is now in the “thick of recovery” and feels proud of the steps she took to care for her mental health.
“I’ve been into those places before against my will and I feel like that’s progress in itself,” Allen said, referring to checking herself into a treatment facility. “I knew that the things I was feeling were too extreme to be able to manage, and I was like, ‘I need some time away.’”
Harbour, 50, has largely remained quiet about the split. In a British GQ interview earlier this year, he offered a brief response: “Oh boy.” He explained that he avoids discussing personal matters publicly, noting that tabloid reports are often exaggerated.
“I’m protective of the people and the reality of my life. There’s no use in that form of engaging because it’s all based on hysterical hyperbole,” he said, adding that engaging with rumors would only fuel a “salacious s–tshow of humiliation.”
The couple married in Las Vegas in 2020, in a ceremony officiated by an Elvis impersonator. Harbour became a stepfather to Allen’s two daughters from a previous marriage. The two first connected in 2019 and made their red carpet debut that same year.
Despite the breakup, Allen appears focused on her personal growth and music. She continues to channel her experiences into creative work and has spoken openly about prioritizing her mental health.
