‘Nosferatu’ (2024) is a gothic horror film directed by Robert Eggers. It’s a remake of the 1922 silent movie ‘Nosferatu,’ which was based on the novel ‘Dracula’ by Bram Stoker. The film stars Bill Skarsgård as the vampire Count Orlok, with Nicholas Hoult and Lily-Rose Depp playing a married couple, the Hutters.

Other actors include Aaron Taylor-Johnson, Emma Corrin, Ralph Ineson, Simon McBurney, and Willem Dafoe. The movie turned out to be a somewhat unconventional holiday hit. Nosferatu premiered on December 2, 2024, in Berlin, Germany. It was released in the U.S. on December 25, 2024, and internationally on January 1, 2025.

Many reviewers have applauded Robert Eggers’ direction, calling the movie both thrilling and visually striking. Specifically, Depp’s performance, noting that her role added to the film’s “spellbinding power,” and praised how the film explores the tension between historical mores and timeless human desires.

Now after the dust has settled following the release, parts of Depp’s audition have been released online, and you can see exactly why she got the role:

Depp displays raw emotion as was described, her character spends most of the movie “running away” from an inevitable force of “nature” that is Orlok. Her depiction of struggle against the visions and supernatural influences is praise-worthy.

Toward the end, Depp comes to a cold realization that it is only her and her alone that can stop Nosferatu. There is a lot of bravery in those final scenes, and Depp’s character sees a sudden transition from helplessness and hysteria to cold-blooded determination to end it once and for all.

Lily-Rose Depp described her experience with ‘Nosferatu’ as both intense and rewarding. She emphasized that movies should make audiences feel something, and Eggers’ film succeeds by evoking disgust and fear. She found the finished product to be not just scary but “gross” and “revolting” in a way that was “palpably effective.”

However, she also noted the film’s stunning beauty, comparing its visuals to the works of famous painters like Vermeer and Rembrandt. Depp also praised the technical aspects of the set, calling it the most technical she has ever worked on, and likened it to a film school experience. Despite the challenges, she expressed pride and excitement about the project.

I remember hearing that movies are supposed to make you feel something, Even if all it does is make you feel totally disgusted, then it’s done its job. Oh my God! It’s not just scary, it’s gross, it’s revolting. It’s palpably effective.
