Sam Rivers, the bassist and founding member of Limp Bizkit, has passed away at the age of 48. The band confirmed the news on social media, honoring Rivers not just as their bass player but as “the soul in the sound.”

“From the first note we ever played together, Sam brought a light and a rhythm that could never be replaced. His talent was effortless, his presence unforgettable, his heart enormous,” the band wrote. The cause of Rivers’ death has not been revealed.

Limp Bizkit, which also includes Fred Durst, John Otto, and DJ Lethal, formed in 1994 and became a defining act in late ’90s nu metal. Known for blending hip-hop and rock with raw, energetic lyrics, the band helped bring heavy music to a mainstream audience.

They released popular albums such as Significant Other and Chocolate Starfish and the Hot Dog Flavored Water, and had hits including Take a Look Around and the chart-topping single Rollin’ (Air Raid Vehicle).

Rivers’ career with Limp Bizkit had ups and downs. He left the band in 2015 after struggling with liver disease caused by excessive drinking. He later shared that he quit drinking, followed his doctors’ advice, and received a liver transplant that saved his life.

The band had remained active in recent years, performing at Reading Festival in August and releasing the single Making Love to Morgan Wallen in September. Their last full album, Still Suck, came out four years ago.

Sam Rivers was more than just a bassist; he was a key part of Limp Bizkit’s sound and identity. His talent and presence left a mark on fans and fellow musicians alike. It’s always sad to lose someone who contributed so much to music, but his legacy will live on in the songs and memories he helped create.
