‘Lioness’ Just Roared to Its Biggest Audience Yet, and the Season 4 Question Is Getting Louder
Taylor Sheridan has become the beating heart of Paramount+, and the CIA spy thriller ‘Lioness’ keeps proving why. The series debuted in 2023 to mixed reviews, then won over critics and viewers in Season 2, with Rotten Tomatoes scores jumping from 54% to 90%. That momentum set the stage for a much bigger third outing.
Season 3 premiered on Aug. 2 with Zoe Saldaña, Nicole Kidman and Morgan Freeman leading the cast. The opening episode drew 7.1 million viewers in its first seven days, comfortably ahead of where Season 2 started. Eight weekly episodes later, the story wrapped on Sept. 20 with a cliffhanger, and fans were left waiting to see how the finale would perform.
Now the finale numbers are in. According to Variety, the finale reached 9.7 million viewers in its first seven days, a series high and the No. 5 Paramount+ finale ever. That also makes it the most-watched episode in the show’s history.
The finale wasn’t a one-night spike. Audience numbers rose throughout the run, and Season 3 averaged 8.5 million viewers per week, a 62% increase over Season 2. Nielsen data tells a similar story.
The series hit its first-ever billion-minute total during finale week, and Season 3 racked up 3.9 billion minutes watched across its 8-week run. Earlier seasons also got a boost, with viewers returning to catch up on the first two chapters.

The show held its own against streaming heavyweights too, landing on Nielsen and Luminate top 10 charts for 8 consecutive weeks. Critics were on board as well, with an 88% Rotten Tomatoes score, alongside a 76% audience score.
This is far from the only Paramount+ success story for Sheridan in 2026. ‘The Madison’ pulled 8 million views in 10 days in March, and ‘Dutton Ranch’ hit 12.9 million viewers in its first week in May. ‘Lioness’ now joins that streak, and its Season 3 premiere on SkyShowtime in Europe also outperformed both previous seasons.
The audience also had plenty to talk about after the finale. Joe’s abduction storyline ended with the reveal that Aaliyah, the daughter of a terrorist financier targeted in Season 1, was behind the kidnapping. That twist ties the season back to where the series began and sets up a tense next chapter.

Despite the record-setting numbers, Paramount+ hasn’t officially renewed the series for a fourth season. The streamer said as much in a Q&A published on Sept. 23, though there’s little reason to panic yet. Season 3 wasn’t announced until Oct. 1, 2025, nearly a year after Season 2 ended.

There are encouraging signs behind the scenes. Kidman urged fans to speak up and demand Season 4 in an interview with Entertainment Weekly, while writer Michael Idov announced in August that he had joined the show as a writer and supervising producer. With Season 3 already airing at that point, many fans read that as a hint that more episodes are in the works.
