‘Little House on the Prairie’ Stars We’ve Lost Through the Decades

Few family dramas hold the same lasting place in television history as ‘Little House on the Prairie’. Fans have followed the Ingalls family across nine seasons, and that same audience has, over time, mourned many of the actors who made Walnut Grove feel like a real place.

As the decades pass, more names from the show’s large ensemble cast have joined that list. This look back covers the actors whose work on ‘Little House on the Prairie’ left a mark on television history, and the lives they lived beyond the show.

The Show’s Central Losses

Michael Landon starred as Charles Ingalls and also created and produced ‘Little House on the Prairie’, giving him influence both in front of and behind the camera. Landon died on July 1, 1991, at the age of 54, from pancreatic cancer three months after revealing his diagnosis. He died at home in Malibu, California, having undergone experimental treatments in his final months.

During his last interview with Life magazine, Landon admitted he wished he had taken better care of himself, saying he had abused his body over the years. His death remains one of the most emotionally significant losses tied to the series, given how central he was to its identity both as an actor and as its guiding creative force.

Melissa Gilbert, who played his onscreen daughter Laura, has spoken about his influence on her decades later. Gilbert has said she was “thinking of and sending all my love” to her onscreen father on the anniversary of his death, and previously described him as “the quarterback” who set the tone for the entire production.

Victor French, who portrayed Isaiah Edwards, one of the Ingalls family’s closest friends and neighbors, died not long after the show ended. French died on June 15, 1989, reportedly from lung cancer, after having worked with Landon even before ‘Little House on the Prairie’ began. French appeared in more than 50 episodes and all three television movies as Isaiah Edwards, and also directed 18 episodes of the series.

The Walnut Grove Regulars Who Have Passed

Katherine MacGregor played Harriet Oleson, the sharp tongued shopkeeper’s wife who became one of the show’s defining characters. MacGregor died on November 13, 2018, at the age of 93. Her role was initially meant to be occasional, but she was promoted to series regular after audiences responded so strongly to her performance.

Following her passing, Melissa Gilbert reflected on working alongside her. Gilbert shared that “the thing people outside of our prairie family didn’t know, was how loving and nurturing she was with the younger cast,” a description that stood in sharp contrast to Harriet Oleson’s onscreen personality.

Richard Bull, who played MacGregor’s onscreen husband Nels Oleson, offered some of the show’s gentler comic moments. Bull died in 2014 at the age of 89, and years after the show ended he reunited with Michael Landon on ‘Highway to Heaven’.

Kevin Hagen and Dabbs Greer rounded out the town’s most familiar faces. Hagen, who played town physician Doc Baker starting in the show’s first season, died in July 2005 following a diagnosis of esophageal cancer the previous year. Dabbs Greer, who played Reverend Robert Alden, died from kidney and heart disease in 2007 at the age of 90, after a career that also included roles in ‘The Green Mile’ and ‘Gunsmoke’.

Guest Stars Who Became Household Names

Not every actor associated with ‘Little House on the Prairie’ stayed there for the whole run. Some arrived as guests and went on to far bigger careers, making their later deaths especially notable to fans who first knew them from Walnut Grove.

Shannen Doherty, who played Jenny Wilder, later became known to a much wider audience through other roles. Doherty died on July 13, 2024, after years of living with cancer. Her time on ‘Little House on the Prairie’ is often cited as an early credit that preceded her rise to fame.

Merlin Olsen took a very different path to Walnut Grove, arriving already established as a professional football star. Olsen joined the cast in 1977 as Jonathan Garvey, and he died in 2010 at the age of 69 after being diagnosed with mesothelioma the year before. His shift from the NFL to primetime television made him one of the more unusual success stories connected to the series.

Recent Losses Among the Cast

Even as the show approaches its fiftieth anniversary since first airing, its surviving cast members have continued to say goodbye to friends and collaborators. Patty Maloney, who played Alice Bates, is among the more recent losses.

Maloney died at age 89 on March 31, 2025, after her brother Dave Myrabo told The Hollywood Reporter that she had been in hospice care in Winter Park, Florida, following several strokes. Myrabo described her as someone who, despite her small stature, accomplished everything she set out to do in a much larger world.

Jack Lilley, another familiar face from the production, died shortly after in March 2025. Gilbert shared that Lilley, one of her favorite people, had died at 91, recalling that he had taught her to ride a horse when she was just a young girl on set.

These recent losses serve as a reminder of just how much time has passed since ‘Little House on the Prairie’ first aired, and how few of its original cast and crew remain to tell its story firsthand.
