Live-Action ‘Aladdin’ Sequel Reportedly Set to Start Filming Next Year
Disney’s live-action Aladdin sequel is reportedly set to begin filming next year, according to Production List. The movie is expected to bring back stars Mena Massoud, Naomi Scott, and Will Smith.
The project has been in development for several years. Back in August 2019, producer Dan Lin expressed excitement about a follow-up, saying Disney was in the early stages of developing a sequel.
He added that the studio hoped to bring back Guy Ritchie as director and Will Smith to reprise his role as the Genie, while telling a story that is “fresh and new.” Lin also said that the sequel would not be a direct adaptation of the animated films The Return of Jafar or Aladdin and the King of Thieves, but could borrow some elements from them.
In February 2020, Variety confirmed that John Gatins and Andrea Berloff were attached to write the script. Lin and Jonathan Eirich were set to produce, and the main cast, including Massoud, Scott, and Smith, were expected to return.
Despite some uncertainty over the years, including rumors in 2023 that the sequel might be canceled, the project appears to be moving forward. Massoud commented on X in May 2023 that the film “undoubtedly will get a sequel,” highlighting the success of the original live-action Aladdin. He also mentioned that the Hollywood artists’ strike may have stalled the project, but with the strike over, he is now waiting for updates.
Production List reports that filming for the sequel is expected to start on January 1, 2026. Shooting locations are likely to include London, other parts of England, and the United States. The film will continue the story of the titular street urchin who, with the help of a magical genie, wins the heart of Princess Jasmine.
This news will excite fans of the 2019 live-action adaptation and the original 1992 animated classic, as it promises to bring back the main cast and expand the story in a new way.
