FX is bringing Ubisoft’s popular Far Cry video games to life with a new live-action series. Variety reports that Noah Hawley and Rob McElhenney are co-creating the show, with McElhenney also set to star. In the U.S., the series will stream on Hulu, while Disney+ will handle international distribution.

The show will follow an anthology format, similar to the games. Each season will feature a new story, a fresh cast, and a different setting. McElhenney shared his excitement about the project, saying,

“Getting to work alongside Noah Hawley is a dream realized. Ubisoft has been remarkably generous, entrusting us with one of the most iconic video-game worlds ever created. And through it all, my FX family continues to lift me up with their constant belief and support.”

This project also marks a reunion between McElhenney and Ubisoft. He previously co-created and starred in Apple TV’s Mythic Quest, which Ubisoft Film & Television produced.

Hawley explained why he was drawn to the franchise. “What I love about the ‘Far Cry’ game franchise is it’s an anthology. Each game is a variation of a theme, the same way each season of ‘Fargo’ is a variation on a theme,” he said.

“To create a big action show that can change from year to year, while always exploring the nature of humanity through this complex and chaotic lens is a dream come true. I’m excited to partner with Rob and bring our shared irreverent, ambitious sensibility to the screen.”

This will be the first live-action Far Cry series for television. The franchise has previously seen a 2008 direct-to-video movie and Netflix’s 2023 animated series, Captain Laserhawk: A Blood Dragon Remix, inspired by Far Cry 3: Blood Dragon.

Far Cry is a long-running first-person shooter franchise published by Ubisoft. The first game was developed by Crytek in 2004 to showcase their CryEngine software. Ubisoft later took over the franchise, mainly handled by Ubisoft Montreal.

Over the years, the series has expanded to six mainline games, a standalone expansion, and several spin-offs. While the games share a common theme of surviving in wild environments and battling despots, each title tells its own story.

The franchise is known for its open-world gameplay, single-player campaigns, and multiplayer modes. Players can also create and share maps for competitive play. The series has generally been praised for its gameplay and memorable villains, though some critics have noted it lacks major innovation. Despite this, the games have been commercially successful.
