Macaulay Culkin Finally Addresses the Biggest ‘Home Alone’ Fan Theory
Macaulay Culkin has finally weighed in on one of the longest-running debates among Home Alone fans: how the McCallister family could afford their lavish lifestyle. Some online theories even suggested that Kevin’s dad, Peter McCallister, might have been involved in organized crime.
The McCallisters live in a large mansion in the wealthy town of Winnetka, Illinois, now valued at around $5.5 million. They have five children and frequently travel internationally, including trips to Paris and Miami, which has led fans to question how they could afford such luxuries.
In a recent interview with the Toronto Sun to promote his role in Fallout season two, Culkin offered his own take on the family’s finances, putting an end to the darker theories.
“I think his father was a corporate lawyer, that’s how they were able to afford such nice things and live in a nice neighbourhood,” he explained. “His mother was an interior decorator, that’s why the house was so nice.”
Culkin isn’t the first to suggest a practical explanation. Home Alone director Chris Columbus has also addressed the family’s wealth in interviews. He told the Hollywood Reporter that he and writer John Hughes had discussed the parents’ jobs during production.
“The father could have, based on John Hughes’ own experience, worked in advertising, but I don’t remember what the father did,” Columbus said. “Not organised crime — even though there was, at the time, a lot of organised crime in Chicago,” he joked.
Culkin’s comments provide a straightforward answer for fans who have long speculated about the McCallisters’ fortune. Rather than a criminal empire, it seems the family’s wealth can be explained by ordinary, well-paying careers.
