Macaulay Culkin Pitches the ‘Home Alone’ Legacy Sequel We Deserve
Macaulay Culkin, the original Kevin McCallister, recently dropped some exciting news for Home Alone fans: he’s not totally against playing his famous role again in a new sequel. The actor shared this during a stop on his “A Nostalgic Night with Macaulay Culkin” tour. He made it clear, though, that he needs the perfect story.
He said, “I wouldn’t be completely allergic” to the idea of returning, but stressed, “It would have to be just right.”
Luckily, Culkin already has a pitch that sounds like it could be just right. The star explained his vision, saying, “I kind of had this idea.” In his plan, the adult Kevin is a busy father, either a widower or a divorced man, who is not paying enough attention to his own child.
The son is angry about this, and things come to a head when Kevin gets locked out of the house. Culkin described the main conflict: “[Kevin’s son] won’t let me in… and he’s the one setting traps for me.”
This means the new Home Alone movie would flip the script entirely. Instead of battling robbers like Harry and Marv, Kevin McCallister would be the one trying to get past elaborate traps set by his own son during the holidays.
Culkin views the whole setup as a deeper emotional story, noting that “the house is some sort of metaphor for our relationship.” He said his character would need to “get let back into son’s heart’ kind of deal. That’s the closest elevator pitch that I have. I’m not completely allergic to it, the right thing.”
It’s clear that the actor is cautious about returning to the franchise unless the script is great. In December 2024, during a fan Q&A event, Culkin joked about the low quality of some past sequels. When asked about doing another Home Alone film, he quipped that even a bad script probably couldn’t be worse than the one for the most recent movie.
