A man from China completely changed his life by following the intense workout of Saitama, the hero from the Japanese manga series One-Punch Man, for 1,000 days straight. The routine sounds like something from a comic book, 100 push-ups, 100 sit-ups, 100 squats, and a 10-kilometre run every single day, but Li Shuangyong decided to take it on in real life.

Shuangyong, 36, began the challenge on 24 August 2021. Before that, his life was difficult. According to Jiupai News, his fish farming business had failed, leaving him in debt, and his marriage had ended. He said of that time, ‘I had to save myself. I could not keep living like that. It could not get any worse.’ Then he discovered the One-Punch Man manga series and was inspired by Saitama’s story.

Saitama is a superhero in the manga who becomes unbelievably strong after a simple but extreme daily training routine. His workout is famous for being short yet punishing: 100 push-ups, 100 sit-ups, 100 squats, and a 10-kilometre run every day for three years, plus no air conditioning or heating. In the story, this routine transforms Saitama into a hero so powerful that he can defeat almost any enemy with a single punch.

Shuangyong decided to replicate the routine exactly. With little money, he ran in shoes that cost less than 10 yuan, about £1.10, and survived mostly on eggs and instant noodles. He filmed every workout and shared it online, quickly gaining a following in China. Fans even started livestreaming his runs and joining him remotely from Taiwan. Over time, sponsors began sending him running shoes and supplements to support his journey.

On 19 July, after 1,000 days, Shuangyong completed the challenge. By then, he had run more than 20,000 kilometres and done hundreds of thousands of push-ups, sit-ups, and squats.

To celebrate, he shaved his head and dressed like Saitama, which caught the attention of the manga’s creator. The creator commented, ‘Your willpower is incredible! Congratulations.’

Shuangyong now has even bigger plans. He hopes to set a Guinness World Record by running a marathon every day for a full year. He said he wants to ‘amplify hope without limits.’

Some people online have said the challenge is impossible to maintain for most people, but no one can deny the inspiration behind his dedication. By pushing himself beyond limits, Shuangyong not only changed his body but also turned his life around, proving that determination and discipline can lead to incredible results.
