Netflix has released the first trailer for its upcoming series Man on Fire, giving viewers an early look at a darker and more emotional take on the story. The show is set to premiere on April 30 and will run for seven episodes.

Yahya Abdul-Mateen II leads the series as John Creasy, a former Special Forces mercenary whose past achievements are now overshadowed by serious PTSD. Based on information from Netflix’s trailer and Tudum coverage, the character is now living a quiet and isolated life, working regular warehouse jobs and avoiding close contact with others.

The trailer shows Creasy as a man who has shut himself off from the world. At one point, he describes his situation by saying, “I’m pretty much a solo act at this point.” He is later confronted by Paul Rayburn, played by Bobby Cannavale, who responds, “Yeah, how’s that working out for you?”

Abdul-Mateen II has explained that Creasy is someone who can handle external pressure but struggles when it comes to emotional openness. That internal struggle is a key part of the character’s journey in the series.

The story changes when Rayburn brings Creasy back into action. He is sent to Brazil after a violent bombing at a skyscraper changes everything. In the aftermath, he is assigned to protect Poe, played by Billie Boullet, who is Rayburn’s daughter and also a witness to the attack.

Over time, the relationship between Creasy and Poe becomes more personal. In the trailer, Creasy tells her, “I see a lot of myself in you.” This moment reflects how their connection develops beyond a simple protection job. Abdul-Mateen II has described their bond as one where both characters fill something missing in each other’s lives.

The series also focuses heavily on action. The trailer includes scenes such as a prison escape, close combat fights, and large stunt sequences. One of the most intense moments shows Creasy jumping from a moving vehicle onto a plane, a stunt that reportedly required extensive preparation according to Tudum.

The series is based on A.J. Quinnell’s work but takes a more character-focused approach while still keeping strong action elements. It aims to balance emotional storytelling with large-scale set pieces.

This version of Man on Fire looks like it is trying to do more than just action. The focus on emotional struggle and character bonds could make it stand out if it is handled well. What do you think about this trailer and the direction of the series? Share your thoughts in the comments.
