Man Says Watching Wuthering Heights Fractured His Relationship With His Mother
A film fan is issuing a public service announcement for anyone planning to catch the new Wuthering Heights adaptation: go solo or go with friends, but definitely leave your parents at home. Emerald Fennell’s latest cinematic offering arrived in theaters over the Valentine’s Day weekend and immediately dominated the global box office.
According to The Guardian, the film raked in a massive $77 million during its debut, securing its spot as one of the most successful openings of the year thus far. Audiences have been flocking to see the chemistry between Margot Robbie and Jacob Elordi, and while some critics have been divided on the interpretation, the general public seems enthralled.
On Rotten Tomatoes, the movie currently holds an 78 percent audience score. One viewer even praised the production as being surprisingly spectacular, highlighting the film’s bold visual style and intense atmosphere.
However, the experience wasn’t quite as magical for Harrison Keefe, an actor and digital creator who decided to take his mother to the screening. Following the movie, he took to Instagram to share a hilariously regretful review of their outing.
He joked that it should be illegal to sit through that specific film with your mother, warning others that the experience was deeply uncomfortable. Keefe admitted that while he expected some level of adult content, the reality of the film’s explicit scenes made for a very long two hours.
He jokingly lamented that the shared viewing had fractured our relationship because of the sheer awkwardness of the situation. He even suggested that theaters should implement a new rating system specifically for this dilemma, proposing an NMS label, which would stand for No Mother-Sons.
His video quickly went viral, gaining over 10,000 likes and prompting a wave of similar stories from other traumatized moviegoers. One social media user recalled a grueling experience watching a particularly graphic episode of Outlander with their entire family, including their sister’s new boyfriend.
They described the silence in the room as being similar to a CIA training facility in endurance, calling the moment both painful and exhausting. Others shared stories of accidental blunders, such as a teenager being taken to see Basic Instinct by their aunt or a fan who took their father to Eyes Wide Shut.
The latter explained that they had assumed the Tom Cruise flick was a standard action-thriller, only to realize their mistake far too late. The consensus among the comment section was clear: checking the content of a film is a mandatory step before inviting your parents to the cinema.
As of February, Wuthering Heights continues to be the primary topic of conversation in the film world, further cementing Emerald Fennell’s reputation for provocative storytelling. Starring Robbie as Catherine Earnshaw and Elordi as Heathcliff, the film also features a talented supporting cast including Hong Chau and Alison Oliver.
The production has been noted for its unique 18th-century punk aesthetic, featuring over 35 different hairstyles for Robbie and a mammoth 136-minute runtime. While this film keeps Elordi in the spotlight, the actor has several other major projects arriving this year, including his role as the Creature in Guillermo del Toro’s Frankenstein.
Meanwhile, Margot Robbie is staying busy behind the camera as a producer on multiple LuckyChap Entertainment projects, though she is rumored to be circling a lead role in a new period drama later this summer. For now, the duo remains the reigning king and queen of the box office, even if they are causing a few awkward silences in living rooms across the country.
