Marvel has a long history of weaving real-world references into its superhero stories, and the latest ‘VisionQuest’ Easter egg has fans in the Philippines cheering. The Disney+ series brings Paul Bettany back as Vision and serves as the final chapter of the trilogy that began with ‘WandaVision’ and continued with ‘Agatha All Along’.

Created by showrunner Terry Matalas, the series follows the “White Vision” as he struggles to regain his humanity and memories after the events of ‘WandaVision’. His quiet life disguised as a regular human is shattered when a bounty hunter tracks him down.

Now, the show has delivered a name-drop no one saw coming. Filipino boxing legend Manny Pacquiao is officially part of the MCU after being mentioned in the third episode of ‘VisionQuest’, titled ‘Reboot’.

The moment comes during a conversation between Vision and his “son” Tommy, played by Ruaridh Mollica. After rescuing each other in the previous episode, the pair are lying low in a hotel when Tommy accidentally cuts his right hand at a vending machine, and his powers manifest.

The mention of “southpaw” triggers the reference. Vision’s AI companion E.D.I.T.H., played by Emily Hampshire, appears in the room, visible only to him, and brings up Pacquiao, one of the greatest southpaw boxers in history, along with his 8 world titles.

The exchange turns into a sweet character beat. When Tommy asks whether he’s actually into boxing or just searching for small talk, Vision decides after a moment’s thought that he genuinely is, admiring the balance of grace and power displayed by the sport’s great fighters.

The episode was directed by Gandja Monteiro and written by Cindy Appel. Its central plot sees Thomas risking everything to reboot Vision, only for the procedure to open a dangerous new connection to the Butcherbird Killer.

Pacquiao didn’t appear on screen or play a Marvel character, but the nod still carries weight. As Sunday Punch noted, it shows his boxing legacy has become recognizable enough to serve as a cultural reference in one of the world’s biggest entertainment franchises.

The boxer-turned-politician fought some of the sport’s biggest names and conquered 8 weight divisions. Along the way, he brought international recognition to Philippine sports. This time, Sunday Punch pointed out, it isn’t a casting announcement or a soundtrack song putting the Philippines in the spotlight. Instead, an actual Filipino sporting achievement is being acknowledged within the story itself.

The cast is packed with familiar faces. James Spader returns as Ultron from ‘Avengers: Age of Ultron’, joined by Todd Stashwick, James D’Arcy, Orla Brady, T’Nia Miller, and Lauren Morais, while Mollica plays an older version of Tommy Maximoff.

Kevin Feige and Jac Schaeffer serve as executive producers alongside Matalas. The series runs for 8 episodes, with the first 6 arriving in pairs before the final 2 drop weekly. Early reactions have been largely warm.

Some fans have called the show a masterpiece so far, while others have described it as mid, and Moviefone gave it 78 out of 100. The series premiered on Disney+ a day earlier than planned in the US, and the finale is set to arrive in November. Marvel Television has not yet announced a second season.
