Margaret Qualley, who many fans hoped would play Rogue in Marvel’s upcoming X-Men movie, recently shared some surprising news that might disappoint those rooting for her.

The new X-Men film, set to be directed by Jake Schreier, who also directed Thunderbolts*, has stirred a lot of excitement among fans, with names like Qualley and Keke Palmer among the popular choices for the role of Rogue.

In a recent chat on Collider Ladies Night, host Perri Nemiroff asked Qualley, now 30, if she would want to join a big franchise and which character she would like to play.

Qualley quickly pushed back on the idea, saying, “Oh, I don’t think I want to commit to a franchise. It seems like a lot of time, and I’m scared [laughs].” When Nemiroff mentioned the rumors and fan hopes about Qualley joining the MCU as Rogue, she responded simply with, “Oh s****. Okay,” before moving on from the topic.

This reaction suggests she might not be interested in taking on the role or committing to a major franchise like the MCU’s X-Men reboot.

The excitement around the MCU bringing mutants into its world has been building since 2019, when Marvel Studios boss Kevin Feige announced at San Diego Comic-Con that mutants, including the X-Men, would eventually appear in the MCU. Feige explained that while the X-Men would be introduced, their version would be different from the previous movies made by 20th Century Fox.

In late 2023, Marvel started planning the new X-Men movie, meeting with writers to shape the story. By May 2024, Michael Lesslie entered talks to write the script and was officially confirmed to be the writer a year later. Jake Schreier was later named director after positive feedback on his work with Thunderbolts.

Feige also revealed that after bringing back some actors from the Fox X-Men films for the Multiverse Saga, the new X-Men movie would feature a fresh cast following the MCU’s reset during the Secret Wars event. He described the project as “a very youth-oriented, focused and cast movie.”

With all this planning and reshaping, fans are watching closely, but it looks like Margaret Qualley may not be joining the MCU’s X-Men adventure after all.
