Margot Robbie returned to Sydney this weekend to lead the jury at Tropfest 2026. The short film festival took place at Centennial Park on February 22 and marked its first edition in seven years.

Robbie served as Jury President for the event. Speaking to the press, she said, Tropfest has long been an important launchpad for filmmakers, and described it as a place where creativity meets opportunity. Her role was not just symbolic. She helped select the winners from 16 finalist short films, each under seven minutes and required to include this year’s signature item, an hourglass.

She was joined on the panel by James Cameron, who appeared virtually, as well as Sarah Snook and Dylan River. Festival founder John Polson welcomed her involvement and said, It’s a true privilege to welcome Margot Robbie home to lead the Tropfest Jury.

The event drew a large outdoor crowd and was supported by YouTube and CommBank. At the end of the night, $100,000 in prize money was awarded to emerging filmmakers to support future projects.

Robbie’s visit comes during a packed year for the actress and producer. She recently starred in a new adaptation of Wuthering Heights, directed by Emerald Fennell. In the film, she plays Catherine Earnshaw opposite Jacob Elordi. She described the role as a puzzle you want to solve. Reports say the film recovered its $80 million budget within days of release, despite divided reviews.

Through her production company, LuckyChap Entertainment, Robbie continues to back projects focused on strong female leads and new voices. She is also attached to upcoming films, a live-action The Sims adaptation, and a prequel to Ocean’s Eleven.

Her return to Tropfest highlights her support for independent cinema in Australia, even as her Hollywood career continues to grow.

It matters when global stars support local festivals. It brings attention and real opportunities to new filmmakers. Robbie using her platform in this way sends a clear message. What do you think about her role at Tropfest and her latest film projects? Share your thoughts in the comments.
