Margot Robbie Stepping Into Serial Killer Heels for a Bold Remake of a Cult Classic Horror Movie
Margot Robbie might be taking on a wild new role as a female version of the infamous serial killer Patrick Bateman in a remake of the horror classic American Psycho.
According to The Sun, the 35-year-old Australian actress is in serious talks to play the lead in this gender-swapped reboot of the 2000 film, which originally starred Christian Bale as the murderous yuppie.
The movie, based on Bret Easton Ellis’s 1991 novel, caused a stir when it came out due to its graphic violence and dark take on 1980s materialism.
An insider told The Sun, “Brett’s novel and the film were so controversial, and the people working on the remake wanted to twist the narrative by having a female actress take on the lead of Bateman.”
They added, “There was a huge backlash about misogyny when the novel came out back in the Nineties, and by having a female killer, it puts a different spin on the crimes.”
The source also said the role could let Robbie show off her acting chops, but warned that the project isn’t finalized yet.
The original film, directed by Mary Harron, followed Patrick Bateman as he lived a double life as a wealthy New York banker and a brutal killer. While some loved Bale’s intense performance and the movie’s sharp humor, others thought it was too shallow, reflecting the greedy culture it mocked.
Still, American Psycho became a cult favorite and helped make Bale a star. News of a remake first popped up in 2024, with Deadline reporting that Lionsgate was developing it and had tapped Luca Guadagnino to direct. The studio has been working on this reboot for a while, and execs are reportedly pumped to see what Guadagnino will do with it.
