The Pirates of the Caribbean franchise is not done yet, and producer Jerry Bruckheimer has given fans a fresh update about the long-awaited sixth movie.

Speaking at TheWrap’s TheGrill 2025 conference, Bruckheimer explained that development is ongoing but the team is not rushing things.

“We’re working on a script,” Bruckheimer said, making it clear that the project won’t move forward until the story is strong enough. “If we don’t have it on the page, it’s not gonna get on the screen.”

The road to a new Pirates film has been complicated. Over the years, Disney has gone through different ideas, from plans to shoot back-to-back sequels to discussions of a full reboot.

Writers Craig Mazin and Ted Elliott were brought in, and at one stage there were even two scripts in play. Eventually, only one version remained.

One of the biggest questions surrounding the franchise has been Margot Robbie’s involvement. Years ago, reports suggested her spinoff idea had been dropped, but Bruckheimer has now confirmed that she is still attached to the upcoming installment. “She’s still involved,” he said, adding that Elliott, who has worked on past Pirates movies, helped shape the current draft. “He worked on it, and we’ve brought someone else in to fill in the blanks.”

Other returning stars remain a possibility. Orlando Bloom has expressed interest in coming back, while Johnny Depp’s future in the series depends on how the script turns out. Bruckheimer himself has hinted that if the role is right, Depp might be open to returning.

The franchise has had its share of ups and downs, with actors like Keira Knightley saying they won’t return, but the series has continued to hold a strong fan base. With Robbie still in the picture and Bruckheimer focused on getting the story right, Disney seems determined to give Pirates of the Caribbean another big-screen adventure.

In my opinion, keeping Margot Robbie attached is a smart move. She’s proven she can carry blockbuster films, and adding her energy to the Pirates world could help refresh the series while honoring what fans already love. But what do you think — should the next Pirates movie focus on new characters like Robbie’s, or bring back the original cast for one last voyage? Share your thoughts in the comments.
