María Gabriela de Faría Brings DCU Star Power to the ‘Clayface’ World Premiere
DC Studios is taking a bold swing with ‘Clayface’, its first-ever foray into horror, and the studio pulled out all the stops to celebrate. The film follows Matt Hagen, a rising Hollywood star whose horrifying descent turns him into a revenge-driven monster, in a story exploring lost identity, corrosive love and the dark side of scientific ambition.
Directed by James Watkins from a screenplay by Mike Flanagan and Hossein Amini, the movie stars Tom Rhys Harries in the title role alongside Naomi Ackie, David Dencik, Max Minghella and Eddie Marsan. It’s the third film in the new DC Universe, following ‘Superman’ and this year’s ‘Supergirl’.
The film celebrated its world premiere on October 13 at the Hollywood Legion Theater in Los Angeles, and one guest quickly caught fans’ attention. María Gabriela de Faría, who played the villain The Engineer in ‘Superman’, was among the stars who turned out for the big night.
The Venezuelan actress posed on the red carpet in an elegant chocolate-brown halter dress with a draped neckline. She kept her look simple and polished, wearing her long dark hair straight and flashing a wide smile for photographers.

De Faría’s appearance is a reminder of how far her career has come. Born in September 1992, she began acting in Venezuelan telenovelas and later led ‘La virgen de la calle’ in 2014 as Juana Pérez.
She also appeared in the 2018 comedy ‘Plan V’ before making her big Hollywood leap. Deadline reported her casting as The Engineer back in 2023, when the film was still known as ‘Superman: Legacy’.

In ‘Superman’, de Faría played Angela Spica, better known as The Engineer, a living computer working alongside Nicholas Hoult’s Lex Luthor. Together, Hoult and de Faría received the most screen time of the film’s villains, serving as a formidable one-two punch against the Man of Steel.
Her DCU journey isn’t over, either. De Faría is set to appear in the upcoming ‘The Authority’, keeping her firmly in the franchise’s future plans. De Faría was joined by a host of DCU stars and guests at the premiere. Harries and Ackie reunited on the red carpet, while director Watkins posed alongside Dencik, DC Studios co-head Peter Safran and producer Lynn Harris.
I can’t wait to share this wonderful movie so lovingly crafted by James Watkins in four short weeks. #ClayfaceMovie – only in theaters October 23. https://t.co/SPfo9nElnP

Other attendees included Sean Gunn, Scott Porter, David Koechner, Agustina Palma, and wrestling couple CJ Perry and Rusev. The turnout showed just how much excitement surrounds DC’s first horror outing.
‘Clayface’ marks a dramatic tonal shift for the DCU. Unlike the brighter superhero adventures that came before it, the film embraces body horror to tell the origin of one of Gotham City’s most notorious villains.

The project came together fairly quickly. Watkins, known for ‘Speak No Evil’ and ‘The Woman in Black’, was hired in February 2025, and Harries was cast that June after what James Gunn described as an exhaustive search.
The film was originally slated for a September 11 release before moving to its current date. ‘Clayface’ now arrives in theaters on October 23, with Warner Bros. Pictures handling distribution.
The film is produced by Matt Reeves, Lynn Harris, James Gunn, and Peter Safran. With a growing roster of DCU talent showing up in support, the premiere suggests the franchise is rallying behind its riskiest release yet.
