María Gabriela de Faría Imagined a Dark, Intimate Bond Between The Engineer and Lex Luthor: “I kept telling James, ‘I think they f****d'”

María Gabriela de Faría is stepping into the DC Universe as The Engineer in James Gunn’s upcoming Superman movie, set to release on July 11, 2025. Her character, Angela Spica, is a scientist who has replaced her blood with nanotechnology, allowing her to manipulate her body and surroundings with liquid metal-like precision. She is also a part of a different DC team, one that hasn’t been adapted to live-action yet, The Authority.
In a recent episode of DC Studios Showcase Official Podcast, de Faría shared her thoughts on the dynamic between The Engineer and Lex Luthor, portrayed by Nicholas Hoult.
She mentioned that she kept telling director James Gunn, “I think they f**d.” She elaborated, “And like Lex is so, you know, he is so serious, and then he has this gorgeous girlfriend that he treats terribly. So I’m like, what if, after hours, Engineer gets really mean with Lex and he loves it? That’s how I play it.”
While so far this is only de Faría’s vision and there is no proof that Lex and Engineer have that kind of a relationship, knowing how she imagined it will certainly make the experience of watching the movie different, and quite frankly, It’s going to be hard not read more into their on-screen interactions.
The actress also commented how good it felt to play the villain and compared it to having a good and evil twin: “Oh it’s delicious, it’s the best.”
Superman is scheduled to hit theaters on July 11, 2025, marking a new chapter in the DC Universe under Gunn’s direction.
