Mariska Hargitay Is Breaking a 15-Year Emmy Hosting Streak, and the Timing Couldn’t Be Better

Awards show hosting gigs have followed a pretty predictable pattern for over a decade, with networks consistently turning to comedians and late-night personalities to carry the broadcast. That formula has held steady at the Emmys in particular, where the last several ceremonies have leaned almost exclusively on comedic hosts to keep the room light.

This year’s ceremony is about to break from that pattern in a big way. NBC and the Television Academy have tapped ‘Law & Order: SVU’ star Mariska Hargitay to host the 78th Primetime Emmy Awards, marking her first time leading a major awards broadcast.

The selection carries real historical weight, since Hargitay becomes the first woman to host the Emmys solo in fifteen years, following Jane Lynch’s turn in 2011. She’s only the fourth woman to take on the role this century, and her selection also breaks a longer-running pattern, as it marks the first time since Angela Lansbury hosted in 1993 that the ceremony hasn’t been led by a comedian, comedic actor, or reality TV personality.

Hargitay has said the offer caught her completely off guard. Speaking on the Today show, she recalled getting the call from NBCUniversal executive Pearlena Igbokwe while backstage preparing to go on stage for her Broadway debut in ‘Every Brilliant Thing.’ “I was backstage, doing my play, and I was about to go on, and I got a call,” Hargitay said. “It was Pearlena, who’s head of the network, and I thought, ‘Oh, I should answer this. Am I getting fired?'”

Once she realized the call was actually an invitation to host rather than bad news, Hargitay admitted she initially thought Igbokwe was joking. The timing lines up neatly with her recent stretch of live stage experience, giving her a fresh confidence heading into her first major hosting assignment despite not having the traditional stand-up or sketch comedy background typical of past hosts.

The hosting gig also carries extra significance for the network itself, arriving during NBC’s 100th anniversary celebrations. Hargitay has spent 27 seasons playing Olivia Benson on ‘Law & Order: SVU,’ a show that airs on NBC, making her selection feel like a natural fit for a network looking to spotlight one of its most enduring stars during a milestone year.

Hargitay’s own history with the Emmys runs deep. She’s earned eight Emmy nominations for Outstanding Lead Actress in a Drama Series over the course of her career, winning the award in 2006 for her work on ‘SVU.’ In a statement announcing the news, Hargitay reflected on what the honor means to her: “Bringing important stories into the light has been the heartbeat of my career. It’s my great honor to host the 78th Emmy Awards — in the 100th birthday year of my beloved NBC — and celebrate this extraordinary community of storytellers.”

The 78th Emmy Awards will air live from the Peacock Theater at L.A. Live on Monday, September 14, broadcasting on both NBC and Peacock. For a ceremony that has leaned on the same type of host for over a decade, Hargitay’s arrival represents a genuine departure, one built less on punchlines and more on the kind of gravity she’s brought to television for nearly three decades.
