Disney is teaming up with OpenAI to let fans create short videos using characters from the Star Wars universe. The partnership comes as part of Disney’s $1 billion investment in OpenAI and will allow the AI platform Sora to generate user-made clips featuring beloved characters.

The deal, according to a source familiar with the arrangement, is set to last for three years. It covers over 200 characters from Disney, Pixar, Marvel, and Star Wars. Some of these AI-generated videos may also appear on Disney+.

Characters included in the agreement range from Mickey Mouse and Elsa to Darth Vader. Importantly, the deal does not use the voices or likenesses of actors, which allows Disney to avoid complicated payment or rights issues.

Mark Hamill, who famously plays Luke Skywalker, shared his thoughts on the project. He said, “It’s fascinating to see it develop, and I’m also apprehensive about how it will be used.” Reflecting on the long-term possibilities, Hamill added, “I guess I’m gonna have to talk to my family about if they want me to be in a ‘Star Wars’ movie 30 years from now after I’m gone.”

This partnership shows Disney’s serious push into artificial intelligence and fan-driven content. By giving audiences the tools to interact with their favorite characters, Disney is exploring new ways to keep fans engaged while expanding its creative reach.
