Mark Hamill Reveals “Disgusting” Horror Franchise He Turned Down: “I Really Resent the Fact That Some Human Being Thought of That Concept”
Mark Hamill, forever known as Luke Skywalker, is finding new roles outside the Star Wars galaxy. The 73-year-old actor has been exploring different movies and genres, showing he isn’t afraid to step away from the sci-fi adventure that made him a household name.
But that doesn’t mean he will take every role offered, especially in some of the most shocking and grotesque horror films ever made.
Hamill is currently promoting his role in the Stephen King adaptation The Long Walk, where he plays The Major. The film reconnects him with horror, but he admits to Entertainment Weekly that he wasn’t sure about returning to the genre at first. “There’s no way I could even see this movie, much less be in it,” he said.
Ultimately, Hamill accepted the role because he could connect with what he calls “the real heart and soul of the picture.”
When it comes to horror in general, Hamill admits he gets squeamish. He doesn’t like watching movies that make him feel bad. He even points out that some producers can’t handle the movies they make. “There’s a producer of Saw. He can’t go see those movies. He produces them and gets all the profits, but he just can’t stomach watching them. I think that’s really funny,” he said.
Hamill also revealed a horror project he immediately refused: The Human Centipede 2. The concept of the film, directed by Tom Six, horrified him before he even read a script.
“Someone said, ‘They want you to be in The Human Centipede Part 2.’ And I said, ‘What’s The Human Centipede?’ They explained the premise to me, and I went, ‘Oh my God! Thank you for putting those images in my head, and I’ll never forgive you for doing so.’ But that was an easy one. I said, ‘No, don’t send the script.'”
“The premise alone — I’ll never see one, and I really resent the fact that some human being thought of that concept of sewing people together, mouth to a***. Goodbye, and never enter my life again.’” He said.
For context, The Human Centipede (First Sequence) is a 2009 Dutch body horror film written, directed, and co-produced by Tom Six. It tells the story of a deranged German surgeon, Josef Heiter, who kidnaps three tourists and surgically connects them, mouth to a***, creating the infamous “human centipede.”
The film stars Dieter Laser as Heiter, alongside Ashley C. Williams, Ashlynn Yennie, and Akihiro Kitamura as the victims.
According to Six, the idea came from a dark joke about punishing a child molester. He also drew inspiration from Nazi medical experiments performed during World War II. When seeking investors, Six initially left out the full details, worried that the shocking concept would scare backers away.
The first film premiered at the London FrightFest Film Festival in 2009 and had a limited U.S. release in 2010.
Despite mixed reviews, it won several awards at international film festivals. Six followed it with two sequels, The Human Centipede 3: Full Sequence (2011) and Final Sequence (2015), and later combined all three into a single film in 2016 called Complete Sequence.
Hamill’s refusal of The Human Centipede 2 shows that even a legendary actor like Luke Skywalker has boundaries. While he enjoys horror with meaning, he has no interest in films designed to disgust.
