Few actors get to meet a lifelike version of themselves frozen in time, but Mark Hamill has just done exactly that. The ‘Star Wars’ star has played Luke Skywalker since 1977, and his relationship with the character has been a constant thread of his career. A new moment at George Lucas’s long-awaited museum has fans smiling all over again.

The Lucas Museum of Narrative Art in Los Angeles held its opening gala on September 19, ahead of a public opening on September 22. The $1 billion institution sits on an 11-acre campus in Exposition Park and houses more than 1,300 objects across 30 galleries. Among them is an exhibition called ‘Star Wars in Motion’, which spans the Lucas Archives from 1971 to 2012.

That is where hyperrealistic figures of Luke, Leia, Darth Vader and C-3PO stand together as if waiting to board a flight. It is also where one of the night’s most charming encounters took place. TheWrap shared an 11-second clip on X on September 20 showing Hamill posing with a life-sized Luke Skywalker at the museum.

In the video, Hamill mirrors the pose of the young, Tatooine-robed figure beside him while photographers capture the moment. According to TheWrap, he joked that the figure looks taller than he does. The post has drawn 34.4K views, 1.1K likes, and 228 reposts, and one fan replied that the people arguing over Luke’s height might be winning this one.

The Luke on display is no ordinary mannequin. ComicBasics reported that the original 1977 costume was not preserved by the studio, so the team built an aged, faithful replica of Luke’s farm-boy outfit from scratch. The effort was led by Tom Spina and character and likeness supervisor Robb De Nicola.

The construction combined a silicone bust with a custom fiberglass mannequin body. It was finished with hand-applied eyelashes, punched eyebrows, and custom acrylic eyes designed for maximum realism. A styled wig was created specifically to capture Luke’s early look, and the finished figure stands beside a screen-used Tatooine landspeeder.

That level of detail is part of the reason the moment landed so well. It is one thing to pose with a prop and another to stand next to a carefully crafted double. The photographers crowding around Hamill in the clip clearly knew they were watching something special.

Hamill was not the only ‘Star Wars’ actor to have a memorable moment at the opening. Samuel L. Jackson was also caught doing a double take beside a figure of his own character, Mace Windu, during the gala. Together, the 2 clips show how strongly the exhibits resonated with the people who helped create the saga.

The museum is also drawing attention for more than its ‘Star Wars’ pieces. Lucas has said it is not a shrine to the franchise, and the galleries include comic art, illustration, and works by artists such as Norman Rockwell. Still, the film memorabilia is clearly a highlight for fans.

The tone of the night suggests that the museum’s launch has been a warm one for Lucas’s collaborators. Lucas hosted friends and creative partners for the evening, and the mood appears to have been celebratory. For a project that took more than 16 years, that is a welcome outcome.

For Hamill, meeting his younger self in this setting is a fitting reminder of how long the character has endured. Nearly 5 decades after ‘A New Hope’, audiences still delight in seeing him and his most famous creation side by side. The joke about height only makes the moment more endearing.
