‘Marshals’ Season 2 Episode 4 Recap and Ending Explained: Rudy Carpenter’s Bomb Leaves Kayce and Andrea in Danger

The latest episode of ‘Marshals’ aired on Sunday and revived an old failure from Cal’s career, closing on an explosive cliffhanger that puts several of his teammates at risk. For anyone looking for a ‘Marshals’ recap and ending explained breakdown, the hour moves quickly and leaves a lot hanging.

Titled Blast Radius, the episode follows Kayce and Andrea as their off hours fugitive hunt uncovers the whereabouts of a notorious bomber who once slipped through Cal’s fingers. Below is a closer look at the plot, the returning villain and the final blast.

Blast Radius Recap and the Late Night Hunt Begins

The episode opens with Kayce dreaming of the pain from the Yellowstone brand burned into his chest, while Andrea obsesses over her father’s murder. Neither can sleep, so Kayce texts Andrea about teaming up on a takedown, and they round up several fugitives before sunrise.

One of those fugitives offers a deal, claiming he has important information on serial bomber Rudy Carpenter, the man Cal and Kayce let go. Gifford, played by Brett Cullen, believes the team has to hear him out because Carpenter is Cal’s biggest unfinished business. Since Andrea got the original tip, Gifford puts her in charge of the hunt and treats it as training for when she fills in during Cal’s medical leave.

Cal and Miles pull gas station security footage showing a figure who might be Rudy dropping a bag, and Miles ends up digging through a dumpster to find it. Inside are a paper covered in random letters and numbers and a broken shotgun that matches a registration tied to Rudy. The paper points to a dark web message board run by a local gang called The Disciples.

Rudy Carpenter Returns to Haunt Cal

Rudy first appeared on ‘Marshals’ last season, and the character is played by Braxton Hale. Kayce tells Cal that sparing Tom Weaver’s life was the one mistake they made that day. The line frames Rudy’s return as a shared burden rather than only Cal’s.

The team raids the chop shop run by the gang’s brothers, Paul and Nick, and gunfire erupts before everyone inside is arrested without Rudy among them. Nick reveals that Rudy has blasting caps only after Kayce threatens to drop a car on him, which leaves Cal angry that the rules were ignored. Cal also questions whether Andrea has what it takes to lead after seeing the extreme methods she and Kayce use to get information.

The stakes climb when the team learns that eight barrels of industrial explosives were stolen from a commercial construction supply company. Gifford warns that this could become another Oklahoma City sized event and aims his frustration at Cal. Cal later admits that his cancer treatments are giving him time to think about his mistakes.

Ending Explained as Kayce and Andrea Face the Blast

Cal spots a crater in security footage and realizes it came from Rudy testing his explosives. That evidence directs the Marshals toward an old farm outside Bozeman. The team moves in carefully, mindful of a warning from Rudy’s ex wife Audrey that he always has an escape plan.

When Cal orders Rudy to the ground, Rudy opens fire, takes several hits and runs into the barn. Kayce and Andrea find him injured but alive, yet instead of following orders he uses his phone to set off a bomb inside. Both Marshals are thrown into the air as the episode ends.

The ending is deliberately unresolved, and no outlet covering it has confirmed what happens next. Both Marshals were caught in the blast, which leaves their immediate fate unresolved. It is also the first story this season to stretch across more than one episode, so answers should come soon.

Kayce and Andrea Grow Closer as Cal’s Diagnosis Shapes the Team

Their bond now appears to extend beyond that of simple teammates, with the late night text from Kayce putting the chemistry on full display. Andrea is still carrying the weight of her kidnapping and even hallucinates one of Randall Clegg’s associates in a mirror. That gives her sudden promotion a more complicated edge.

Cal tells Gifford about his cancer, and Gifford wants someone ready to replace him if he has to step away. Andrea doubts she is the pick and says she has no interest in being in charge, a feeling Kayce shares. Miles, meanwhile, hates hiding the diagnosis from Maddie but keeps his promise to Cal.

Belle faces trouble of her own when a man warns her that the casino wants its money immediately. The episode also introduces a new young Kayce, played by Berlin Enrique Nelson, and includes a nod to ‘Yellowstone’ when Kayce jokes that he was “born for the barn, not the country club.” If you believe Kayce and Andrea survive that barn blast, and whether Cal deserves the blame for letting Rudy Carpenter go, the comments are a good place to make your case.
