‘Marshals’ Showrunner Explains Season 2’s Tragic Premiere and Kayce’s Biggest Fear

Few TV cliffhangers this year left fans as anxious as the ‘Marshals’ Season 1 finale. The CBS ‘Yellowstone’ spinoff ended with rancher Tom Weaver, played by Chris Mulkey, betraying Kayce Dutton and taking his son Tate hostage, threatening to kill the boy unless Kayce sold him his East Camp land.

Fortunately, the wait was short. The Season 1 finale aired May 24, and Season 2 premiered on October 4 with the episode “All Hat No Cattle,” meaning Luke Grimes’ Kayce was off-screen for barely 4 months (spoilers for the premiere follow).

The new season wasted no time resolving the cliffhanger, but it came at a high cost. Kayce managed to rescue Tate, but Tom’s daughter Dolly Weaver, played by Ellyn Jameson, died when her father crashed the vehicle they were using to escape the Marshals, while Tom himself survived.

Showrunner Spencer Hudnut, who wrote the episode, admitted Dolly’s arc changed in his own mind over time. “I had thought throughout last season that Dolly was always in on it — in my mind at least — so when we finished production last year, she was much guiltier than she actually turned out to be,” Hudnut told TheWrap.

That ignorance of her father’s plan, he explained, is exactly what made her death so tragic. Hudnut also called it the hardest episode of ‘Marshals’ he has had to break, because the writers had painted themselves into a corner. Ultimately, he felt that storyline needed to end on a tragic note. The result was a victory Kayce couldn’t fully celebrate.

The premiere picked up immediately after the finale. Kayce used Dolly as leverage to force a meeting with Tom, and after signing the deed, he was ready when Tom predictably broke his word again, having anticipated the betrayal by bringing an unloaded gun.

The hour packed in a river fight, a horse chase, and a helicopter. Kayce ultimately killed Tom’s henchman Jeb and brought Tate out alive, before his composure finally broke when he found a photograph of his late wife Monica with their son.

Grimes has said there are no higher stakes for Kayce than his son’s life being threatened. He also spoke about Kayce battling inherited trauma while trying to be the best father he can be to Tate, played by Brecken Merrill.

That father-son dynamic sits at the heart of what comes next. Hudnut suggested that Tate growing up might be Kayce’s biggest fear, and he teased that Tate will surprise everyone this season.

For Kayce, Season 1 was about finding his next purpose and a new team that felt like family. Season 2 will test those bonds as the story moves quickly to deal with the premiere’s fallout.

That includes Belle Skinner, played by Arielle Kebbel, who was nearly seriously hurt in the opener. According to Hudnut, her son will start to understand just how dangerous her job is, while Cal and Belle’s growing feelings for each other will also be explored.

Created by Hudnut and based on characters by Taylor Sheridan and John Linson, the series was renewed for a second season in March 2026. Fans also have a familiar face to look forward to, as ‘Yellowstone’ star Jefferson White is set to reprise his role this season.

After its special post-NFL premiere time, ‘Marshals’ moves to Sundays at 8 p.m. ET/PT beginning October 11. New episodes air on CBS and stream on Paramount+ the following day.
