Marty Supreme is quickly becoming one of the most talked-about films of 2025. The movie has now debuted on Rotten Tomatoes with a very strong score, placing it among the highest-rated films of Timothée Chalamet’s career.

The film is directed by Josh Safdie, who also co-wrote the script with Ronald Bronstein. It is loosely inspired by the real-life story of famous American table tennis player Marty Reisman. Timothée Chalamet stars in the lead role and also serves as a producer. The cast includes Gwyneth Paltrow, Odessa A’zion, Kevin O’Leary, Tyler Okonma, Abel Ferrara, and Fran Drescher.

Marty Supreme first screened at the New York Film Festival on October 6. It is set to be released in U.S. theaters by A24 on December 25. According to Rotten Tomatoes, the film opened with a 95 percent Tomatometer score, based on 141 reviews, which is a major achievement for both the film and Chalamet.

Critics have been especially impressed by Chalamet’s performance. Ben Wasserman from Film-Forward.com wrote that Chalamet may finally be closing in on Oscar glory, saying “With his latest performance in A24’s Marty Supreme, he might just get it.” Jeff Mitchell of the Phoenix Film Festival echoed that feeling, stating “Chalamet could win the Best Actor Oscar, and he wouldn’t need any topspin to do it.”

Many reviews highlight the intensity of the performance. Jocelyn Noveck from the Associated Press praised the casting, writing that the role is “played by Chalamet in a delicious synergy of actor, role and whatever fairy dust makes a performance feel both preordained and magically fresh.” Mark Jackson from Epoch Times described Chalamet’s character as someone who creates constant tension, saying the performance can raise your blood pressure.

The film itself has also received strong praise. Fico Cangiano of CineXpress compared it to other fast-paced crime dramas, calling it “Phenomenal!” Wendy Ide from The Observer described the movie as “a thrilling visual onslaught” and said it was exhausting in a good way. Bilge Ebiri from New York Magazine’s Vulture simply said the movie is “enormously entertaining.”

While most reactions have been very positive, a few critics mentioned flaws. Julian Roman from MovieWeb noted that the film runs long and has pacing issues, but still called Chalamet’s work “a tour de force, awards-worthy performance.” Even critics with mixed feelings agreed that the lead performance stands out.

The industry response has already been strong. Marty Supreme was named one of the top ten films of 2025 by both the National Board of Review and the American Film Institute. It also earned three Golden Globe nominations, including Best Motion Picture – Musical or Comedy, Best Actor for Chalamet, and Best Screenplay for Safdie and Bronstein.

Based on early reactions, Marty Supreme looks like a major moment in Timothée Chalamet’s career. The Rotten Tomatoes debut confirms that critics see this as one of his strongest performances yet. In my opinion, this feels like the role that could finally push him into serious awards territory. What do you think about the early praise for Marty Supreme and Chalamet’s performance?
