Anne Hathaway is reportedly in high-level discussions to join the Marvel Cinematic Universe in a significant capacity, a move that follows her recent decision to decline a major villainous role in the upcoming Spider-Man: Brand New Day. According to prominent industry insider MyTimeToShineHello, the Academy Award winner is currently circling a “major role” within the franchise’s next creative arc.

This news aligns with the studio’s broader shift toward Phase 7, which is expected to center heavily on the introduction of the X-Men and the start of the “Mutant Saga.” The rumors regarding Hathaway’s Marvel future intensified following reports from Jeff Sneider, who revealed that the actress was the original choice to play a female antagonist in the fourth Spider-Man film, scheduled for release on July 31.

“Those were like legit rumours, and I’d heard that basically Anne Hathaway passed, and… Sarah Snook passed,” Sneider explained during a recent industry update. He noted that the original concept for the role involved an “older female villain,” but after both actresses declined, the production seemingly pivoted, potentially rewriting the character or reducing the part in favor of other narrative elements.

Marvel Studios is currently laying the groundwork for its post-Avengers: Secret Wars landscape, with reports suggesting that the subsequent Mutant Saga will focus on the complex history of the Summers family. This narrative direction is expected to place Scott Summers, also known as Cyclops, at the center of the MCU, alongside key figures like Jean Grey and Havok.

While Hathaway’s specific character remains a mystery, her involvement would provide a massive prestige boost to a phase that aims to redefine the superhero genre through the lens of mutant politics and family drama. Outside of the superhero rumor mill, Hathaway is currently navigating one of the most prolific years of her storied career.

She is set to reprise her iconic role as Andy Sachs in the highly anticipated The Devil Wears Prada 2, which is scheduled to release in May and features the return of Meryl Streep and Emily Blunt. Additionally, the actress is starring in the pop-star melodrama Mother Mary, directed by David Lowery, which is slated for an April theatrical release and features a soundtrack by Jack Antonoff and Charli XCX.

Hathaway is also attached to several other high-profile projects for the remainder of the year, including the sci-fi mystery Flowervale Street, where she stars alongside Ewan McGregor under the direction of David Robert Mitchell.

Her diverse slate is rounded out by the period drama The Odyssey, which is currently targeting a summer release window. Between her potential entry into the mutant-heavy future of the MCU and her return to beloved franchises like The Devil Wears Prada, Hathaway remains a central force in the entertainment landscape.

As Marvel Studios continues to finalize its roster for Phase 7, the potential casting of an actor of Hathaway’s caliber suggests a commitment to character-driven storytelling for the X-Men’s long-awaited debut.
