Marvel Rivals Devs Confirm They’re “Licensed” to Use Any Marvel Character From the Past 85 Years — And They Want to Get Weird With It
NetEase, the developer behind Marvel Rivals, is quickly adding new heroes to the game. Season 3 will bring fan favorites like Blade and Phoenix. With plans to introduce new characters every month, some fans might wonder if the studio will ever run out of Marvel heroes to add.
The good news? According to Guangyun Chen, the game director, that won’t be a problem. In an interview with VideoGamer, Chen said the team has permission to use any character from Marvel’s entire 85-year history.
This means they have access to a huge pool of heroes and villains to choose from. “We are licensed to explore the full Marvel universe,” Chen explained.
What’s more, the team doesn’t want to just focus on the biggest, most famous characters. Chen said they plan to bring attention to lesser-known but interesting characters as well. He mentioned how proud they are to include unique heroes like Jeff the Land Shark and Squirrel Girl. These characters might not be household names, but they add fun and variety to the game.
Jeff the Land Shark is currently the most unusual character in Marvel Rivals, and Chen says the team wants players to experience Marvel in fresh and surprising ways. “We want to offer a chance to discover new aspects of Marvel,” he said.
With so many characters available, the possibilities are endless. There are plenty of strange, silly, and weird characters that could show up in the game. Imagine seeing Spider-Man’s villain Big Wheel rolling into battle or playing as Bill the Lobster. Chen even joked about wanting to include the Contemplator.
NetEase is keeping its future plans under wraps, but Chen hinted we can expect some really unusual choices before the year ends. For now, he’s happy that players are enjoying the current lineup. “The feedback has been overwhelmingly positive,” he said. “It’s incredibly rewarding to see players connect with our choices so far.”
So, Marvel Rivals fans can look forward to a steady stream of new heroes, from the famous to the downright weird, as the game keeps growing.
