Marvel Studios Exec Describes ‘What If…?’ Season 3 as the “Culmination of the Trilogy,” Teases More Show Details

‘What If…?’ brought a breath of fresh air to the MCU. Despite the first season receiving mixed reactions from fans, it was successful enough to justify additional seasons and expand the multiverse, drawing inspiration from several notable storylines.
Season 2 was released in an unconventional way, with episodes dropping over nine days like holiday gifts for fans to unwrap.
It’s been rumored for some time that ‘What If…?’ Season 3 will be the show’s final season, particularly following the recent departure of the head writer for other projects. In a recent interview with ComicBook, Brad Winderbaum, head of animation, seemingly confirmed this by describing Season 3 as “a culmination of the trilogy.”
What If…? Season Three is — that might be the one that comes out next, in terms of animation. That is the culmination of a trilogy. We’re actually close to completing that one, and it really feels like you’ve gone through this amazing emotional experience with Uatu, in a way that’s… What’s great about The Watcher is that he presents himself as uncaring, and cold, and just an observer, but he cares more than everybody [and] anybody. That is on full display in that third season.
Early previews of ‘What If…?’ Season 3 were released shortly after Season 2 concluded in late 2023. These previews confirmed the appearance of characters such as Sam Wilson / Captain America (Anthony Mackie), Monica Rambeau (Teyonah Parris), Bill Foster / Goliath (Laurence Fishburne), Bucky Barnes / Winter Soldier (Sebastian Stan), and Alexi Shostakov / Red Guardian (David Harbour). Additionally, America Ferrera will join the cast as Agent Morales.
