Marvel Studios Just Hit a Box Office Milestone No Other Franchise Has Ever Touched

Few franchises have reshaped Hollywood as Marvel Studios has, and its box office dominance has now reached a staggering new peak. What began as a bold experiment in interconnected storytelling has become the most lucrative film machine the industry has ever seen.

The road here wasn’t always smooth. After a stretch of box office underperformance and audience apathy, the MCU crossed $30 billion worldwide in 2024 thanks to ‘Deadpool & Wolverine’ and its $438 million global debut. That made Marvel the first film franchise ever to reach that number, and the lows along the way included a record-low $206.1 million for ‘The Marvels’.

Now the studio has leapt even further ahead. According to Exhibitor Relations Co., Marvel Studios’ 38 releases have now grossed $35 billion worldwide, making it the most successful film franchise in movie history.

The gap between Marvel and its closest rivals is enormous. Back when the MCU hit $30 billion, ‘Star Wars’ stood at $10 billion worldwide and James Bond at $7.8 billion. Even now, ‘Star Wars’ trails Marvel by tens of billions of dollars.

The MCU’s heavy hitters have done much of the lifting. Its top earners include ‘Avengers: Endgame’ at $2.7 billion, ‘Avengers: Infinity War’ at $2 billion, and ‘The Avengers’ at $1.5 billion. As of 2024, 10 of its films had grossed over $1 billion globally, while 2 had passed $2 billion.

Consistency has been another hallmark. Disney noted at the time that each of Marvel Studios’ first 33 feature films opened at No. 1 at the domestic weekend box office. Marvel president Kevin Feige has also reflected on the secret behind that success. He has said the key lesson he learned across 34 films was making sure each one delivers a moment that fills audiences with excitement and enthusiasm.

This milestone lands during a particularly active stretch for the franchise. The biggest driver has been ‘Spider-Man: Brand New Day’, which opened to over $360 million domestically and has grossed nearly $948 million in North America and more than $2.48 billion worldwide.

Marvel’s past is also paying off in the present. ‘Avengers: Endgame Encore’ recently returned to 3,060 North American screens and was expected to top the domestic chart with $26 million. The re-release includes an exclusive look at footage from ‘Avengers: Doomsday’.

The next test arrives soon. ‘Avengers: Doomsday’ hits theaters on December 18, and with so much momentum behind Marvel this year, the crossover event carries serious weight heading into its release. Earlier predictions had pegged the film for around $1.6 billion globally.

The broader industry is watching closely too. Gower Street Analytics projected 2026 would become the highest-grossing year worldwide since 2019, with Marvel’s films among the titles expected to drive that growth.

Not everyone is celebrating the numbers equally. The milestone quickly reignited the long-running debate over Marvel’s place in cinema, with one reply under the post openly mocking online self-styled cinephiles who dismiss the MCU.

Still, the figure speaks for itself. For a franchise built on dozens of interconnected films, crossing $35 billion is proof that shared universes, when handled carefully, can outperform almost anything else Hollywood has tried.
