Directed by Jake Schreier, Thunderbolts first hit theaters on May 2, 2025, following a red carpet premiere in London on April 22. It is the 36th movie in the Marvel Cinematic Universe and closes out Phase Five.
The film follows a group of antiheroes who find themselves in a dangerous situation and have no choice but to work together on a deadly mission.
The movie features a big ensemble cast, including Florence Pugh, Sebastian Stan, Wyatt Russell, Olga Kurylenko, David Harbour, and Julia Louis-Dreyfus. The script was written by Eric Pearson and Joanna Calo, with Lee Sung Jin also contributing after previously working with Schreier on the Netflix series Beef.
Marvel first teased the idea of a Thunderbolts team in 2021 and officially announced the movie in 2022. Filming began in early 2024 after delays from the Hollywood strikes, with production taking place in Atlanta, Utah, and Kuala Lumpur. Shooting wrapped in June.
One detail that had people talking was the asterisk in the movie’s title. The meaning is revealed in the ending, when the team rebrands as the New Avengers. The title even changes in the credits, and some later promotions used the new name.
While critics responded well to the movie, it underperformed financially. By the end of July, it had earned about $190 million in the U.S. and $192 million overseas, for a total of $382.4 million. Reports suggested it needed to make around $425 million to break even, calling that target “unachievable.”
Still, reviews were strong. On Rotten Tomatoes, 88% of critics gave it a positive score, with the site’s consensus saying, “Assembling a ragtag band of underdogs with Florence Pugh as their magnetic standout, Thunderbolts refreshingly goes back to the tried-and-true blueprint of the MCU’s best adventures.”
On Metacritic, it scored 68 out of 100, which counts as generally favorable. CinemaScore audiences gave it an A–, and PostTrak reported that 74% of viewers would recommend it. Audience polls after screenings rated it 4.5 out of 5 stars.
So while Thunderbolts* didn’t break Marvel’s box office records, it still found an audience and earned praise. Now fans can look forward to watching it at home on Disney+ starting August 27.
