Marvel Studios Says Goodbye to Patrick Stewart as ‘Avengers: Doomsday’ Becomes His Final Role
Few reunions in superhero history have felt as unlikely as the return of the original X-Men to Marvel’s shared universe. For years, the comics had put the mutants and the Avengers on the same pages, while the movies kept them apart under different studios. When Patrick Stewart’s name appeared on the ‘Avengers: Doomsday’ cast list, it felt like a promise finally kept, and Marvel Studios’ goodbye to Patrick Stewart now gives that promise a bittersweet ending.
Stewart died on October 28 at his home in Los Angeles, and his family shared the news on October 29. Marvel’s response came within hours, and it drew hundreds of thousands of likes as fans shared their grief.
The studio’s statement opens by saying that everyone at Marvel Studios is deeply saddened by Stewart’s passing. It credits him with bringing Professor Charles Xavier to life with extraordinary grace, intelligence and humanity, defining the character for generations of fans from ‘X-Men’ to ‘Logan’ to ‘Avengers: Doomsday’. It describes him as a singular talent, a generous collaborator and a true gentleman.
The message ends with condolences for his wife, Sunny, his children, his friends and the countless fans whose lives he touched with his art. It was posted with a still of Stewart as Xavier in profile, wearing his X-emblem jacket beside a stained-glass window, a quiet image that matched the tone of the words.

Alongside the tribute, Marvel confirmed that ‘Avengers: Doomsday’ will be Stewart’s last on-screen appearance. The film arrives in theaters on December 18, and it brings together heroes from several worlds, including the Avengers, the Fantastic Four, the Thunderbolts, the Wakandans and the X-Men. For fans who grew up with Stewart’s Xavier, it will be a chance to say goodbye on the biggest screen possible.
One trailer moment has taken on new meaning since the news. It shows Professor X and Magneto reflecting on their shared history and the idea that their world may be dying. Another has Xavier warning that something is coming that they may not be able to deter.
The Russo brothers, who direct the film, have talked about what it meant to bring Stewart and his co-stars back. Anthony Russo has described reuniting actors like Stewart, James Marsden and Rebecca Romijn as part of the Marvel miracle, noting that the Avengers and X-Men always interacted in the comics but were divided between studios once they reached the screen. They never imagined the day they would find their way back to one another.
That sentiment explains why the casting meant so much. Stewart’s return wasn’t just a cameo, it was proof that the two worlds could finally meet.
It took time to get there. After ‘Logan’ in 2017, Stewart said he felt that film had closed the door on his Professor X, even after long conversations with Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige. He eventually returned in 2022’s ‘Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness’ as a variant of Xavier, and then again for ‘Doomsday’.
In July, he made clear he had no plans to retire, saying he could never imagine officially stepping away and would always be an actor. That makes the news harder to accept, since he seemed to have more work ahead of him.
Beyond the studio statement, Feige offered his own remembrance. He recalled being in awe the first time he saw Stewart on the set of the first ‘X-Men’ and said he turned out to be brilliant, charming, warm and generous. He added that Stewart was even more remarkable away from the cameras, with a sharp sense of humor.
Jackman, Stewart’s longtime co-star, called him a tremendous friend and man. Together, the tributes paint a consistent picture of a professional who was as kind as he was accomplished.
The character will continue without him. Christopher Abbott has been announced as Professor X in Marvel’s ‘X-Men’ reboot, which is directed by Jake Schreier and set for May 5, 2028. Stewart’s version, though, will always belong to the films he helped make.
Whether Marvel will include a dedication in ‘Doomsday’ hasn’t been announced. For now, fans are preparing to watch the film with a deeper sense of what it means.
His family has asked that memorial gifts go to the Johns Hopkins Alzheimer’s Disease Research Center Fund and the Alzheimer’s Foundation of America’s caregiver resources.
