Marvel Writer Reveals RDJ’s Dr. Doom Will Be Explained in Comics Before ‘Doomsday’ Release

Robert Downey Jr. recently announced his return to the MCU, this time as Doctor Doom, saying it’s “the same task, different mask.” For the past few years, the MCU has been building up Kang the Conqueror as the main villain of the Multiverse Saga. However, due to legal issues surrounding the actor playing Kang, Marvel Studios has decided to take a different direction.

The response to RDJ’s announcement has been mixed. Fans worry that the MCU doesn’t have enough time to properly set up a character as significant as Doctor Doom. Therefore, it’s expected that he will at least make a cameo appearance in the upcoming Fantastic Four: First Steps.

Recent news suggests that to fully grasp RDJ’s Doctor Doom, fans should turn to the comics for insight into his character. Marvel writer Deniz Camp recently recommended that fans looking to understand this variant of Doctor Doom should read Ultimates #4, scheduled for release on September 4, 2024.

The official synopsis for the issue states the following:

THE FATE OF THE ULTIMATE FANTASTIC FOUR! Doom’s years of torture at the hands of the Maker finally catch up to him in this secret history of the real Reed Richards! And tensions rise among the Ultimates when Doom might be more fixated on re-creating the life he should have had than the life he’s got…

The Ultimate series has been running since June, following the events of Jonathan Hickman and Stefano Caselli’s Ultimate Universe #1. Created by Deniz Camp and Juan Frigeri, the series introduces an all-new team of Ultimates.

The storyline features Tony Stark sending Peter Parker a radioactive spider to help him regain his Spider-Man persona. Since then, Iron Lad (Stark), Captain America, Doom, Thor, and Sif have been assembling a network of lost heroes who are determined to bring about change. Their mission is to dismantle the Maker’s Council and restore freedom and free will to a world dominated by shadowy forces. With Issue 4 focusing on Doctor Doom, it’s a must-read for anyone wanting to learn more about this variant of the character in the MCU!
