Marvel’s ‘Ghost Rider’ May Have Found Its Villain in a ‘Heated Rivalry’ Breakout
Marvel Studios has spent years circling the Spirit of Vengeance, and the project has finally picked up speed. The film was announced at San Diego Comic-Con in July, where Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige revealed on Saturday, July 25, that Ryan Gosling will star in a standalone MCU movie. It is the kind of casting news that fans had speculated about for a long time.
The pairing had been brewing for a while. Gosling first spoke about wanting to play Ghost Rider in 2022, which drew a warm response from Feige, and he confirmed in March 2026 that talks with Marvel had taken place. By the time the Hall H panel arrived, the announcement felt less like a surprise and more like a long-awaited payoff.
Now the question is who will stand in his way. On Tuesday, Oct. 28, a post from Cosmic Marvel on X caught fire by claiming that Connor Storrie is in talks to play the villain in ‘Ghost Rider.’ The post credits the news to The Hollywood Reporter, and it quickly spread across fan communities.
The scoop did originate with The Hollywood Reporter, which reported on Oct. 27 that Storrie is in talks to star opposite Gosling. Knight Edge Media was the first to report Storrie’s attachment to the project, with THR then confirming he is in talks for the villain role. Since then, Deadline, Variety, TheWrap and Entertainment Weekly have all confirmed the talks.
Storrie arrives with plenty of momentum. He is widely described as the breakout star of ‘Heated Rivalry,’ and he has also appeared in ‘Criminal Minds’ and in several recent feature films, including ‘Riley’ and ‘April X.’ A leap from a buzzy streaming romance into a Marvel antagonist role would be a dramatic pivot, and that contrast is part of why the news landed so loudly.
Of course, there is a big catch. The Hollywood Reporter’s report does not identify which villain Storrie would play. Dark Horizons likewise notes that it is not known which character he would be portraying. That leaves the door wide open for theories.
One name is already making the rounds. Comicbook.com floated Blackheart, a demon from Marvel Comics who is the son of Mephisto, as one potential role for Storrie. That is speculation rather than confirmation, but it fits neatly with a story built around a supernatural deal gone wrong.
That deal is central to the hero’s origin. Johnny Blaze is a motorcycle stuntman who becomes the supernatural Ghost Rider, and Nicolas Cage played him in the 2007 film and its follow-up. Gabriel Luna also played the character in the TV series ‘Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.’ Gosling’s version, however, will mark the character’s first appearance in a Marvel Studios film.
Behind the camera, the project is in familiar hands. Shawn Levy, who previously directed ‘Deadpool & Wolverine,’ is helming the film. He and Gosling are working together first on ‘Star Wars: Starfighter,’ which hits theaters on May 28, 2027, and they will reunite with writer Jonathan Tropper for ‘Ghost Rider.’ That existing creative shorthand could be a real asset as the cast comes together.
The calendar is also locked in. Marvel has set a release date of July 28, 2028, for ‘Ghost Rider.’ That gives the studio plenty of time to finalize its casting and decide how much to reveal about its big bad.
For now, Storrie’s involvement remains a report of talks, not a done deal, and Marvel has not commented publicly on his role. Still, the energy around this potential casting says a lot about how invested fans are in Gosling’s take on the character. If the deal closes, the next big mystery will be which villain Storrie plays, and whether Marvel is ready to put a fresh face on a classic foe.
