Marvel’s ‘Werewolf by Night’ Finally Gets a Nod in ‘VisionQuest’
Marvel has always loved to hide connections in plain sight, and ‘VisionQuest’ is turning out to be one of the studio’s most reference-heavy shows yet. The latest episodes landed on Disney+ with a cluster of Easter eggs, and one line in particular is getting a lot of attention. It’s a quick joke about a monster hunter who may be one of the MCU’s more unusual characters.
The series, which brings Paul Bettany’s Vision back for the final chapter of the ‘WandaVision’ trilogy, released episodes 3 and 4 together. The third episode, titled ‘Reboot’, gives more screen time to Paladin, the bounty hunter on Vision’s trail, played by Todd Stashwick. After a brutal clash, Paladin is badly banged up and patches himself up while talking with his Handler.
That conversation is where the reference turns up. Fans pointed out that the Handler mentions bite marks from a thing halfway between a man and a wolf, and Paladin quips that it was a perfectly reasonable fella by day. GamesRadar identifies the line as a nod to Jack Russell, the hero of ‘Werewolf by Night’, played by Gael García Bernal.
The werewolf joke isn’t the only Marvel history in the scene. The Handler also asks whether she should send a gift basket to the Ten Rings Syndicate for providing adamantium chest armor, a thread last seen in ‘Shang-Chi’. She then brings up a Brooklyn job that left him pulling shrapnel from an IED out of his gut, and Paladin calls it a punishing disagreement with an old friend, which points to the Punisher.

There’s a third reference as well. The Handler recalls a concussion from a steel fiber billy club, and Paladin replies that if you can’t take the heat, you should get out of Hell’s Kitchen. That’s an allusion to Daredevil, and it fits the character’s roots, since Paladin first appeared in a 1970s ‘Daredevil’ comic. GamesRadar notes that his suit shares elements with Charlie Cox’s hero.
For those who need a refresher, ‘Werewolf by Night’ was Marvel Studios’ first Special Presentation, released on October 7, 2022. It’s a black-and-white throwback to classic Universal horror movies, directed by composer Michael Giacchino. Bernal stars as Jack Russell alongside Laura Donnelly as Elsa Bloodstone, and a fully colored version arrived on October 20, 2023.

The reference is a rare mention of the character, and A.V. Club cautioned that it’s not entirely clear the line refers to anything other than ‘Werewolf by Night’. Still, most outlets are treating it as a clear nod, and it’s a small way of tying the special into the larger MCU.
Marvel Mania rounded up other references across the episodes. They include F.R.I.D.A.Y.’s heartbreaking reference to Tony Stark’s death, ‘WandaVision’ sitcom callbacks, a possible reference to Scott Lang’s book and Tommy’s super-speed powers. Taken together, the episode feels like a love letter to the shared universe.

For fans, that mix matters. ‘VisionQuest’ is the last new live-action Marvel show on Disney+ before ‘Avengers: Doomsday’, and it has been topping the platform’s charts. Dropping hints about characters from across the MCU’s history keeps viewers combing through every scene.
It also raises a question that fans love to speculate about: whether any of these characters might show up in person. Nothing has been announced, and for now the references remain just that: a wink from a show packed with them.
